Spartans Open CAC Play with Big Win at Harrisburg

MIDDLETOWN, PA – The York College men's basketball put together one of their most complete efforts of the season as they rolled past PSU Harrisburg 86-73 in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both squads. The Spartans placed a season-high four players in double figures as their 86 points was a season-high for the Green and White.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

• The Spartans got off to a good start in the game as they pushed out to a 12-5 lead just over five minutes into the game. Harrisburg cut the Spartan lead to one but York quickly pushed their advantage back to seven at 24-17 with 7:46 left in the first. The Lions put together an 8-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 25-24. Khalil White canned a three-pointer on the Lions next possession to give Harrisburg a 28-24 lead. The Spartans responded with a spectacular four-point play from Brad Wesner as York tied the game with 4:31 left in the half. That four-point play kick started a 14-3 Spartan run that turned a four-point deficit into a 38-31 lead. York would settle for a 38-33 halftime lead. Wesner led York with 10 first half points.

• The Lions came flying out of the intermission as they cut York's lead to one at 44-43 a mere 3:46 into the second half. Freshman Darin Gordon hit a huge three pointer as York embarked on an 18-3 run that covered over four minutes as the Spartan lead grew to 16. The run was capped by a three-pointer from junior Matt Scamuffo as York led 62-46 with 11:28 left in the game.

• Freshman Jared Wagner hit a pair of free throws with 5:19 left, growing York's lead to 17 at 71-54. That would prove to be York's largest lead of the game.

• Harrisburg cut York's lead to 12 at 80-68 but Wesner hit a pair of free throws on the ensuing possession to push the lead back to 14. The Spartans went 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final 47 seconds of the game to salt away the win.

The Spartans improve to 8-4 all-time against the Lions as York has won two straight … as conference opponents (7 games), the home team has lost each game in the series … York is 4-0 at the Capitol Building with their previous three wins having come by a combined four points … York hit a season-high nine three pointers as the set season highs for shooting percentage (55.6%), three-point field goal percentage (52.9%), free throw percentage (79.4%) and free throws made (27) … Harrisburg is the second straight team to attempt 30 three point field goals in a game after Messiah jacked up 31 in last Tuesday's game … York out-rebounded their second straight opponent … freshman Zach Novick netted a career-high nine points as he was 3-for-5 from the floor including 1-for-1 from three and 2-for-2 from the stripe … senior Brad Wesner had a season-high 12 points, his second double digit effort of the year … freshman Jared Wagner notched his second straight double-digit effort with his 10 points … Wagner has made 15-of-19 from the free throw line for the year as he was 6-for-7 in the win … senior Dalton Myers is now 31 points of 1,000 career points as he has 969 points in 73 career games … freshman Darin Gordon set a new career-high with six points as he cashed out a pair of three pointers in the win … York committed 17 turnovers in the win as it is the third straight game that the Spartans have made 17 miscues or more after starting the season averaging 11 turnovers per game … York's 45 field goal attempts tie a season low (vs. St. Vincent @ F&M) … the Spartans' 13 point win was their biggest margin of victory for the year … York is now 3-2 in conference openers under head coach Matt Hunter as York has won their last three CAC lid-lifters.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday afternoon as they will host Mary Washington in a Capital Athletic Conference clash in Wolf Gymnasium. Tip time in York is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
