Eagles Nip Spartans in Overtime to Advance to CAC Finals

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The 2016 York College men's soccer season came to an end as Mary Washington's Jack Saslowsky booted home a goal 2:12 into overtime to lift the Eagles to a 2-1 win in the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament.

The Eagles advance to the CAC championship game where they will face the winner of the Christopher Newport/Frostburg State semifinal game in Newport News.

How It Happened

• The Eagles got on the board first in the 13th minute. Riley Fisher fed Ryan Van Maanen in the box and Van Maanen finished off the chance, giving the hosts an early 1-0 lead.

• The Spartans tied the game 2:22 later as Matt Freibaum assisted Jordan Evans for his second goal of the year as the Green and White wasted little time in responding to the Eagles' opening salvo.

• The Eagles held a 6-2 edge in first half shots while UMW had a 5-2 margin in shots on goal. The Eagles had a 2-0 edge in corner kicks.

• The two teams went back and forth in the second half with the Eagles holding the statistical advantage. UMW outshot York 10-3 but both teams had two shots on goal. Mary Washington had an 8-1 bulge in corner kicks.

• The Eagles got back-to-back corner kicks and they took advantage of the second one as Mitchell Williams hit the ball into the box and Jack Saslowsky put the ball home for the game-winner. The goal pushed the Eagles into the conference championship game.

The Eagles now lead the all-time series 18-15-2 as they won both match-ups against the Spartans this fall … the Spartans are now 5-4 all-time against the Eagles in the CAC Tournament …. the Spartans are now 33-16-3 all-time in the CAC tournament … the loss closes out the career of Charlie Johnson, Matt Freibaum, Kevin Horan, Jack Pebole, Nick Dudek, and Anthony Flores … Matt Freibaum ended the season as York's leading scorer as the senior finished with 17 points on five goals and a team-best seven assists … York placed three players in double figures in scoring as Nathan Bilbie (12 points on six goals) and Ryan Ockford (12 points on six goals) joined Freibaum … York had 11 players score at least one goal for the season and nine players hand out at least one assist ... the Spartans were held to five shots which tied a season low (@CNU on Sept. 24) … it was the fourth time time this season that York had single digits in shots and they were 0-3-1 in those games … senior goalie Charlie Johnson finishes his Spartan career with a record of 24-20 with a 1.03 career goals against average, a career save percentage of .752, 14 shutouts, 164 saves, and 4,736:15 minutes of play in 56 career games … Johnson finishes his career ranked fourth in goalie wins, sixth in career saves, sixth in goals against average, fourth in career games started (52) and fourth in goalie games played (56).

 

Up Next:

The 2016 Spartan season has concluded with the CAC tournament loss. York is slated to return nine of their ten top scorers and eight players who started at least 13 games during the year.
