How It Happened
• The Spartans got off to a quick start against the Saints. York fired off the first four shots of the game. The Green and White got on the board in the 15th minute as Caitlin Rankin collected a rebound from Natalie McCarthy and booted home the game's opening tally. The goal was Rankin's second of the season and gave York the early lead.
• The Saints looked like they were poised to tie the game in the 24th minute as Marymount was awarded a penalty kick. Marymount's Chloe McAuliffe took the kick but Spartan goalie Brittany Cullison saved the shot as she kept the Saints off the board.
• The Spartans dominated the first half as they outshot the Saints 11-1 while York also held a 2-0 margin in corner kicks.
• The second half was more limited offensively on both sides as the rain intensified as the match carried on.
• The biggest play of the second half came in the 72nd minute as Courtney Stephens had a free kick from 20 yards out just wide of the box on the left hand side of the field. Stephen hit an absolute rocket that looked like it was headed into the upper right 90. At the last moment, Cullison got enough of the ball to deflect it off the cross bar and back out into the box. The Saints pounced on it but their shot off the rebound went wide left and the Green and White dodged a major bullet.
• The Spartans had a chance to put home an insurance goal but a Saint defender cleared the ball off the line in the 88th minute.
