Box Score YORK, PA – The York College women's basketball team captured a 58-47 Capital Athletic Conference victory over the Salisbury Sea Gulls on Saturday afternoon in Charles Wolf Gymnasium.
The Spartans improve to 15-3 overall and they are now 9-2 in the Capital Athletic Conference. The Sea Gulls fall to 10-8 overall and are now 6-6 in the league.
The Spartans trailed early as the Gulls got off to a 4-0 start. The Green and White answered emphatically with a 13-0 run keyed by the play of Beth Wiseley (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) and Sam Hruz (White Marsh, Md./Mercy). Wiseley got the run started with a five straight points as she hit a pair of free throws and then converted a three-point play on the ensuing Spartan possession. Hruz then scored six straight points for York followed by a Morgan Kuehne (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) bucket to push the York lead to 13-4 with 4:43 remaining in the quarter. The Spartans would take a 17-7 lead after 10 minutes of play.
Salisbury trimmed the York lead to 19-13 on a Julia McLaughlin lay up with 7:02 left in the second quarter. Wiseley canned a three to push the lead back to nine and the York lead would vacillate between seven and nine points over the next five minutes. York ended the half on a 7-2 spurt as they took a 33-21 lead to the half.
The Spartans sprinted out of the gate at the half as they scored the first seven points of the stanza, pushing their advantage to 40 -21 with 7:37 left in the quarter. York would push their lead to 49-29 at the end of the third quarter.
The Spartan lead got up to 22 at 51-29 early in the fourth. The Sea Gulls would outscore York 18-7 the rest of the way to provide for the final 11 point Spartan margin of victory.
The Spartans were very balanced as Katie Wagner (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) led the way with 12 points as she was 5-for-9 from the floor and 2-for-3 from the free throw line. Wagner added four rebounds, an assist and a steal in her 26 minutes of work. Wiseley chipped in with 10 points as she was 3-for-6 from the floor including 1-for-3 from distance while she also converted all three of her attempts at the free throw line. Hruz added eight points, six rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and a three steals in the victory. Senior Julianne Lambert (Hockessin, Del./Padua Academy) chipped in with seven points, three assists and two steals for York.
McLaughlin led all scorers as she poured in a game-high 24 points in 38 minutes of work. McLaughlin was 9-for-26 from the floor and 6-for-6 from the free throw line. She pulled in seven rebounds with a blocked shot and a steal. Josephine Noonan was the other Sea Gull in double figures with 10 points. No other Sea Gull had more than four points in the loss.
The Spartans shot 44.7% from the floor while they went 1-for-6 from three. The six point three-point attempts were four less than their previous low mark of the year. The Spartans finished the game 15-for-22 (68.2%) from the stripe.
Salisbury shot 30.5% from the floor as they had 12 more attempts from the floor than York. The Gulls were 0-for-4 from three and 11-for-15 from the free throw line.
The Sea Gulls dominated the Spartans on the glass as they held a 39-33 margin in rebounding. Salisbury had 22 offensive rebounds which led to 15 second chance points. York did a very good job of taking care of the ball as they committed just 15 turnovers. York forced 20 Salisbury turnovers which York turned into 25 points.
The game was the second in a series of five games in ten days. The next three games in the string will be on the road starting with Monday's trip to the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Tip time at the Anderson Center is set for 6:00 pm.
