Box Score MIDDLETOWN, PA – The York College women's basketball team knocked off the rust of a seven day layoff as the Spartans posted a 64-50 Capital Athletic Conference win at PSU Harrisburg on Wednesday night at the Capital Union Building in Middletown.
York improves to 14-3 and 8-2 in the league while the Lions are now 7-10 and 3-7 in the conference.
The Spartans found themselves down early as the Lions pushed out a 5-0 lead before Katie Wagner (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) got the Green and White on the board as she split a pair of free throws with 5:03 left in the quarter. That kick started a 9-0 Spartan run that was keyed by a pair of Morgan Golec (Abingdon, Md./Patterson Mills) three pointers. The Spartans would take a 14-13 lead at the end of one as Golec cashed out a three off an offensive rebound at the buzzer for York.
The Spartans scored the first eight points of the second quarter, pushing their lead to 22-13 with 4:56 left in the half. Harrisburg scored six straight, cutting York's lead to 22-19 with 2:07 left. Golec picked up a bucket on York's next possession to give York a 24-19 halftime lead.
Golec led the charge in the first half with 15 points as she was 6-for-8 from the floor including 3-of-5 from three with five rebounds.
The Spartans came out of the half and put the game away as they outscored their hosts 16-6 to take a 40-25 lead heading to the fourth quarter. The final quarter of play saw the offenses perk up with the benefit of plentiful free throw shooting. York went to the line a whopping 28 times in the final 10 minutes of play. York could have had a bigger margin of victory but struggled from the stripe over final 10 minutes as they made just 16 of their 28 attempts.
Golec led the Spartans with a career-high 20 points while she also pulled in eight rebounds in just 20 minutes of play. Golec was 8-for-12 from the floor, 3-for-6 from three and 1-for-1 from the free throw line. Senior Julianne Lambert (Hockessin, Del./Padua Academy) came off the bench to play a stellar game with a career-high 10 points as she was 1-for-4 from the floor and a career-best 8-for-10 from the free throw line. Lambert also had three rebounds, an assist and a big time blocked shot in the fourth quarter.
Junior Sam Hruz (White Marsh, Md./Mercy) added nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds. She was credited with four steals, two blocked shots and two assists in her 33 minutes of work. Sophomore Morgan Kuenhe (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) added eight points, nine rebounds and a career-high four blocked shots. Wagner chipped in with nine points while Sarah Shearer (York, Pa./West York) contributed eight points and four rebounds in her 27 minutes of action.
The Lions received 48 of their 50 points from three different players. Kiara Carter had a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 15 caroms. Freshman Brittany Ulrich led the Lions with 18 points as she was 7-for-15 from the floor including 1-for-3 from three and 3-for-6 from the stripe. Kaitlyn Carmo was the third Lion in double figures with 16 points while she also had six rebounds.
The Spartans shot 31.3% from the floor and 16.7% from three. York finished the game converting 20-of-33 from the stripe. York held Harrisburg to 29% shooting from the floor and 25% (4-for-16) from three. Harrisburg made 10-of-17 from the line in the loss.
Harrisburg outrebounded York 48-47 but the Spartans held an 18-14 advantage in second chance points.
The game is the first of five Capital Athletic Conference contests in the next ten days for the Green and White. The Spartans will play their lone home game of that stretch on Saturday when they host Salisbury University in a CAC tilt. Tip time from Charles Wolf Gymnasium is set for 1:00 pm.
