Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The 13th ranked Christopher Newport University Captains used a 25-8 run to start the second half en route to a 72-53 Capital Athletic Conference victory over York College on Saturday at the Freeman Center in Newport News, Virginia.
The Captains improve to 14-1 overall and remain perfect in the league at 8-0. The Spartans fall to 7-8 overall and are now 3-5 in the league.
The Spartans hung with the talented Captains throughout the first 20 minutes of play. The teams went back and forth throughout much of the first half. The Green and White pushed out to a 21-16 lead on a pair of free throws from senior Chris Conway (Luthersville, Md./Dulaney) with 6:29 left in the half. That would prove to be York's biggest lead of the game. CNU would outscore York 16-6 over the final 6:10 of the half to take a 32-27 lead to the break.
The Captains ensured there would be little drama in the second half as they came out of the break with the 25-8 run that pushed their lead to 57-35 midway through the second half. York would continue to battle, trimming the CNU lead to 14 on a pair of Dalton Myers (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) free throws with 5:35 left but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the way.
Four Captains reached double figures led by Rayshard Brown as he poured in 17 points with five assists and four rebounds in his 32 minutes of action. Brown was 5-for-7 from the floor including 3-for-4 from three while he also went 4-for-6 from the free throw line. Marcus Carter and Tim Daly each contributed 15 points for the Captains. Daly recorded a double-double for the Captains as he also pulled in a game-high 12 rebounds while he also had four blocked shots and four steals. Aaron McFarland was the fourth Captain in double figures with 12 points.
The Spartans were paced by Myers as the junior forward tallied 16 points in 35 minutes. Myers was 4-for-10 from the floor but was a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. Myers also had four rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots. Sophomore Matt Scamuffo (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) contributed 14 points in 21 minutes of play. Sophomore Blayde Reich (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon) was the third Spartan to reach double figures as he chipped in with 12 points while he also pulled down at team-best seven rebounds.
The Captains dominated on the glass as CNU held a 40-25 margin in rebounding which led to a 12-2 margin in second chance points. The Captains also hurt the Spartans with scoring off turnovers as CNU scored 24 points off York's 16 turnovers. York managed to get just seven points off the Captains' 13 miscues.
York was again outstanding at the free throw line as York cashed in 19-of-22 attempts from the line. York is shooting almost 77% as a team from the line this season as they lead the conference in the category.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday, January 20 when they welcome Frostburg State University to York for a Capital Athletic Conference contest. Tip time at Charles Wolf Gymnasium is set for 8:00 pm.
