Spartans Cruise Past Marymount in CAC Opener

Box Score

ARLINGTON, VA – The York College women's soccer squad opened their 2015 Capital Athletic Conference schedule with a 3-0 win on the road at Marymount University on an overcast and dreary Saturday in Arlington, Virginia.

The Spartans improve to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the league as they have won two straight. The Saints fall to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

The Spartans struck quickly in the win as senior Jamie Sokolis (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) fired the game's opening salvo. Sokolis found the back of the net in the fifth minute to give York the early edge. Sokolis' goal was her first of the year and came off a pass from sophomore Emily Cronise (Hagerstown, Md./Boonsboro).

Cronise made the lead 2-0 just under 20 minutes later as she notched her first goal of the year.

The Spartans dominated the first half of play as they outshot the Saints 13-1 in the first half including 9-1 in shots on goal.

York's strong play continued after the break as they added to the lead in the 64th minute of play. Sophomore Emily Birsa (Chalftont, Pa./Central Bucks South) served a ball into the box from the left wing. Birsa's pass settled on the foot of sophomore Corie Elliott (Laurel, Md./Delmar) and Elliott finished off the chance for her third goal of the year.

That would be more than enough for senior goalie Kate Lutte (Catasauqua, Pa./ Catasauqua) as she posted her second straight shutout and third overall shutout. Lutte registered four saves in the clean sheet. Erin Harris suffered the loss for the Saints as she made seven saves and allowed a pair of goals as she played the opening 45 minutes of the game for Marymount. Joanna Chenaille played the second half for Marymount as she made seven saves and allowed one goal.

The Spartans outshot the Saints 25-6 overall and also held a 17-4 advantage in shots on goal. York held a slight 3-2 margin in corner kicks.

The Spartans play their final non-conference contest of the season on Wednesday afternoon when they host Elizabethtown College in their annual match up. Kick off at Graham Field is set for 4:30 pm in York.
