Spartans Fall to #22 Salisbury in CAC Opener

SALISBURY, MD – The York College men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision at #22 Salisbury University in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both squads on Saturday.

The Sea Gulls are now 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the league while the Green and White falls to 2-6-1 overall and 0-1 in the league. The Spartans have dropped four straight by a combined five goals as York continues to keep games very close.

The Spartans had some outstanding opportunities in the opening 45 minutes of play. York's best chance came in the opening five minutes as Christopher Saberton (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) had a great chance in the box. Salisbury keeper Drew Staedeli made a brilliant save to keep the game scoreless early.

The game would remain scoreless through the opening 45 minutes of play as the Spartans outshot the Sea Gulls 5-4 in the first half including 3-2 in shots on goal.

Salisbury opened the scoring in the 58th minute when Brooke Zentgraf banged home a header off a pass from Taylor Groginksi. Zentgraf's shot just went past the outstretched arms of Spartan keeper Charlie Johnson (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and into the back of the net for the 1-0 Salisbury lead.

The Sea Gulls got a key insurance goal in the 78th minute as Salisbury got a goal on a counter attack. Leslie Umunna collected a loose ball at midfield. He carried the ball into the Spartan defensive third. Johnson came out to challenge Umunna inside the box but the junior midfielder chipped a shot over the charging Johnson for Salisbury's second goal of the game.

Staedeli earned the shutout victory as the senior notched his third clean sheet of the season. He recorded six saves in the win.

Johnson was very good despite allowing a pair of goals. He made seven saves as he kept the Spartans in the game on the road.

Both teams attempted 12 total shots in the game while Salisbury had a 9-6 margin in shots on goal. York had a 6-1 margin in corner kicks in the loss.

The Spartans play their final non-conference match of the year on Wednesday as they head to Annville to face the Lebanon Valley Flying Dutchmen. Kick off is slated for 4:00 pm.
