Spartans Suffer Frustrating 5-4 Loss at Gettysburg in Season Opener

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The York College field hockey team opened its 2015 season on the losing end of back-and-forth battle that eventually resulted in a 5-4 victory for Gettysburg College on Wednesday afternoon at Musselman Stadium.

The Spartans (0-1) played brilliantly throughout the game as they continuously rallied back from the deficits that Gettysburg (1-0) handed them. Unfortunately, the Bullets had one too many rounds left in the chamber as they scored a goal with less the seven minutes to play which proved to be the boost of momentum they needed to carry them to the finish.

Sophomore Ali Posey (Airville, Pa. / Red Lion) put forth an exceptional effort as she tried to will her team to victory with a career-high three goals on a career-high 13 shots.

Gettysburg had a big gun of its own in Samantha Wright who also tallied a hat trick, including the game-winner. Wright sealed the victory as she drove to the left post and punched a shot underneath the keeper's pads.

The Spartan offense also received a tally from freshman Lindsay Nye (Duncannon, Pa. / Susquenita) who recorded her first collegiate goal when she tied the game, 2-2, at the end of the first half. Nye accounted for five total shots as she and Posey combined for 18 of the team's 24 total shots.

The Spartan defense faced pressure all game long as they saw 20 shots from the Bullet offense, but freshman goalkeeper Eve Hauptle (Alexandria, Va. / West Potomac) made eight saves in her collegiate debut and played a big factor in keeping the game close.

Freshman defender Jennifer Morrissette (Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) also made significant contributions in her collegiate debut as she earned two defensive saves.

Despite a disappointing outcome in today's game, the Spartans have plenty to build on for their next game, which is slated for Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at home against Eastern Mennonite.
