Box Score

YORK, Pa. – The York College field hockey team earned its first Capital Athletic Conference win of the season with a 2-1 victory over St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday afternoon at Kinsley Field.

The win for York (7-6, 1-2 CAC) is a crucial victory as it puts the Spartans in third place in the CAC standings ahead of St. Mary's (6-6, 1-2) as the teams jockey for position in the five conference playoff slots.

The Spartans did not start out the game the way they wanted to as they fell into an early hole in the fifth minute of play following a goal by the Seahawk midfielder Mollie Belson.

York supplied sufficient offensive pressure through the first half, recording even shots on goal out of a total of nine shots, but had zero goals to show for its efforts.

In the second half, the Spartans turned up the pressure even more and out-shot the Seahawks 14-2, with nine of their shots landing on goal.

York finally got on the board in the 43rd minute of play when Lindsay Nye (Duncannon, Pa. / Susquenita) batted in a pass Autumn Mallory (Leonardtown, Md. / Leonardtown) for her ninth goal of the year.

After the playing the role of the helper on the first goal, Mallory played the role of the scorer on the second goal as she deflected in a pass from Sydney LaMarsh (Pasadena, Md. / Chesapeake) who inserted the ball from the edge of the circle following a penalty corner.

The penalty corners played a big factor in York's success in the second half as the Spartans produced 10 corners and scored on two of them.

The Spartans face get a tough matchup in their next contest as they face their fifth ranked opponent of the season in No. 5 Salisbury. York travels to Salisbury on Saturday for the 6:00 p.m. CAC tilt.
