Box Score YORK, Pa. – The York College men's soccer team picked up a 1-0 victory in a crucial Capital Athletic Conference battle with Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon at Graham Field.
With the win, the Spartans (5-6-2, 2-1-1 CAC) improve their unbeaten streak to four games and take an important leap up the CAC standings as they come down the home stretch of their conference schedule in the upcoming weeks.
The lone goal of the game came in the 34th minute when Matt Freibaum (New Market, Md. / Linganore) chipped a cross from inside the 18-yard box on the right side to the middle where Christopher Saberton (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) rushed in and sent a well-placed header to the lower right corner of the net.
Just moments before the goal, York had a prime scoring opportunity when Brendan Saberton (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) serviced a pass into the box and found Joel Teston (Manassas, Va. / Forest Park) who nearly had a header goal of his own, but hit the left post instead.
York finished the first half out-shooting Mary Washington (9-3, 2-2) by a margin of 8-4 and did an excellent job of giving the Eagles virtually no quality scoring chances.
The Spartans kept on the attack in the second half and had multiple quality attempts as they tried to add on to their lead.
The first of the quality chances came in the 54th minute when Chris Hobbs (Horsham, Pa. / Hatboro-Horsham) sent his shot just inches high of the crossbar on an attempt outside the 18-yard mark following a clear attempt by the Eagles on a Spartan corner kick.
Chistopher Saberton also generated quality chance in the second half when he popped up a pass to himself while splitting the defense on the right side of the net, but was forced to rush his shot from close range that ended up sailing over the crossbar.
Goalkeeper Charlie Johnson (Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin) was not forced to make many saves, but came up big when he had to. In the 79th minute Johnson rushed out of the 6-yard box to cut down the angle on a shot by Riley Fisher, who had broke free of the Spartan defense on a pass played over the top.
The Spartans start their run of five-consecutive conference games to closeout the regular season begging on Tuesday when the host Frostburg State at 4:00 p.m.
