Box Score YORK, PA – The York College women's basketball team captured a big home win on Saturday as they downed Christopher Newport 54-42 in Capital Athletic Conference action in York.
The Spartans improve to 9-10 overall as they have won five of their last six games. York is now 5-7 overall in the league. With the loss, the Captains fall to 12-7 overall and 8-4 in the conference.
The Spartans got off to a great start in the game as they sprinted out to a 10-4 lead. The Captains cut the lead to four only to have York push the lead to 12 thanks to an 8-0 run. The run was highlighted by a Jess Selby (Upper Marlboro, Md./Calverton School) three as York led 18-6. The Captains trimmed the lead to three at 22-19 but the Green and White outscored Christopher Newport 12-3 over the final four minutes of the half to take a 34-22 lead to the break.
The Green and White opened the second half with a flourish as Morgan Golec (Abingdon, Md./Patterson Mill) hit back-to-back threes to push the lead to a game-high 18 points just 1:12 into the stanza.
The Captain refused to go away as they eventually cut the Spartan lead to seven at 44-37 with 6:03 left in the game. The Spartans quickly pushed the lead back to 11. The Captains made one more run at York as they cut the lead to eight at 48-40 but York answered that charge with a 6-0 run to take the 54-40 lead before the Captains scored the final bucket of the game to give York the 12-point win.
The dynamic post duo of Shea Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) and Sam Hruz (White Marsh, Md./Mercy) powered the Spartans to victory. Wassel had 13 points and six rebounds in her 28 minutes of play. Wassel was 6-for-10 from the line and 1-for-1 from the free throw line. Hruz added 11 points, five rebounds, four blocked shots, four assists, and two steals in 36 minutes of action.
Golec finished the game with nine points, six rebounds and one assist. Sophomore point guard Brianna Bisci (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) was brilliant in the game as she did not commit a turnover in 36 minutes while she also had four points, a career-high tying seven rebounds, three assists, a blocked shot and a steal.
All-CAC forward Camry Green led the Captains as she tallied 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Green was 8-for-14 from the floor while she also blocked two shots and also had three steals. Lauren Cox contributed eight points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal in her 25 minutes of play.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 38.5% from the floor and 35.3% (6-for-17) from three. York struggled from the line as they converted just 8-of-15 (53.3%) from the stripe.
The Captains were held to 26.5% shooting from the field while they went just 3-for-21 (14.3%) from downtown. The Captains attempted just seven free throws, making three in the loss.
The 42 points allowed is the Spartans' second best defensive effort of the year, just five points more than the 37 points York allowed in the win over Franklin & Marshall on November 22. The Captains are the third team the Spartans have held under 27% shooting in a game this year and the lowest since the F&M game.
The squads finished the game even on the glass as both teams recorded 44 rebounds. The Captains held a 14-8 margin in second chance points and also owned a 28-20 advantage in points in the paint.
York survived committing 21 turnovers in the game, as the Captains were only able to convert the Spartan mistakes into 13 points. Conversely, the Captains committed 16 turnovers, which York turned into 11 points.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Wesley College to take on the Wolverines. The Spartans will be looking to earn head coach Betsy Witman her 300th career win as the victory over the Captains was number 299 in Witman's illustrious career. Tip time in Dover, Delaware is set for 6:00 pm.
