Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The York College women's basketball team saw their modest three game win streak come to an end as the Mary Washington Eagles downed the Spartans 66-48 in Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
The Eagles improve to 13-4 overall and 9-1 in the league as they remain in the thick of the conference title race. The Spartans fall to 7-10 overall and 3-7 in the conference as the Eagles swept the regular season series from the Green and White.
York got off to a strong start in the game as they burst out to a 14-8 lead thanks to a pair of three pointers from Morgan Golec (Abingdon, Md./Patterson Mill) and one three from Brianna Bisci (Bangor, Pa./Bangor). The Spartans eventually pushed the lead to a game-high nine on a pair of Morgan Kuehne (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) free throws with 10:58 left in the half.
The Eagles embarked on a 10-0 spurt to take a 22-21 lead before Sam Hruz (White Marsh, Md./Mercy) drilled a triple to give York their final lead of the game at 24-22 with 6:23 remaining in the stanza. The Eagles would take the lead to the break after Erin Drumheller canned a trey with 1:39 left on the clock, giving UMW a 33-31 halftime edge.
The second half saw the Eagles seize control of the game with a half-opening 14-3 run that increased the UMW lead to 13 just over six minutes into the half.
The Spartans never really threatened the lead as they trimmed the Eagle advantage to nine twice but each time Mary Washington quickly pushed the lead back to double figures. The Eagles eventually increased the lead to 21 before setting for the 18-point win.
The Eagles placed three players in double figures led by Brianne Comden as she tallied 16 points and pulled in nine rebounds. She was 6-for-15 from the floor and 4-for-7 from the line while she also had two blocked shots. Sarah Listenbee added 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals in the victory. Caitlin Ciniero was the third Eagle in double figures with 10 points and seven boards.
Golec was the only Spartan in double figures as she had 11 points. Golec was 3-for-9 from the floor including 3-for-8 from three and 2-for-4 from the line. Bisci added nine points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal while reigning CAC Player of the Week Shea Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) tossed in nine points and grabbed six boards.
The Spartans did not do a good job of taking care of the ball in the loss as they committed 22 miscues. The Eagles made those mistakes hurt as they converted the York mistakes into 27 points. The Eagles also dominated York in the lane as they held a 22-8 advantage in points in the lane.
Neither team shot the ball well in the game as both teams struggled from the floor. Mary Washington finished the game shooting 28.9% from the floor, 31.3% (5-for-16) from three and 61.9% (13-for-21) from the free throw line. The Spartans also shot 28.9% from the floor but took 23 less shots than UMW due to their high turnovers. York did convert 8-for-24 (33.3%) from three but went only 14-for-28 from the free throw line.
The Spartans will look to get back on the winning side of the ledger on Wednesday night when they begin a two game home stand starting with a league game against Penn State Harrisburg. Tip time from Wolf Gymnasium is set for 6:00 pm.
