Spartans Take Down Blue Jays with 37-7 Home Victory

YORK, Pa. – The #30 York College wrestling team cruised to a 37-7 dual match victory over visiting Johns Hopkins University on Friday night at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.

The Spartans (13-4) trailed the Blue Jays (1-10) 7-4 after the first three bouts, but then York ripped off seven consecutive victories, capped off by back-to-back pin falls by John Shorter (Lancaster, Pa. / Manheim Township) at 197 and Mike Spencer (Pompton Plains, N.J. / Pequannock Township) at 285.

Ryan Flynn (Newtown Square Pa. / Marple Newtown) continued to prove himself as one of York's most reliable wrestlers as he scored the first points for the Spartans on the night with a 9-0 major decision at 133.

Chase Colley (Glen Allen, Va. / Hermitage) nearly made it back-to-back wins for the Spartans, but the 141-pound wrestler dropped a close match that resulted in a 3-1 loss in the first overtime period.

Drew Spector (West Deptford, N.J. / West Deptford) tied up the team score at 7-7 after he took an early lead and then ground out the remaining time to earn himself a 3-1 decision.

John Allenson (Glenside, Pa. / Germantown Academy) took a 2-0 lead and was looking to add on some more points as he gained position on his opponent before and injury to his opponent occurred. Allenson would eventually have to settle for a victory due to injury forfeit in the first period.

Brett Secor (Pompton Lakes, N.J. / Pompton Lakes) filled in for an injured Tyler Rhoads (Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin East) at 174 and made an impact as he earned a 9-4 decision.

Nick Zak (Jackson, N.J. / Jackson Liberty) continued his season dominance and further extended York's lead as he claimed a 10-4 decision at 184.

Shorter and Spencer finished off a dominating team performance with consecutive pin falls at 197 and 285. Shorter finished off his man in 5:45 while Spencer put his opponent's back to the mat in 1:26.

The Spartans return to the mat tomorrow as they compete in the East-West Duals at Messiah College. Action kicks off at 1:00 p.m. when York faces Washington & Jefferson.
