Second Half Surge By #1 Messiah Ends Hopes of a Spartan Upset

Box Score

GRANTHAM, Pa – After holding No. 1 Messiah at bay through one half of play, the floodgates opened up in the second half on the York College men's soccer team on Wednesday night, losing by a final score of 5-0.

Dodging a bullet in the 15th minute when a Messiah (9-0) header hit off the post, York (3-2-3) picked up its play and began to attack the Falcons with a more spirited effort. The Spartans recorded held the advantage in both shots on goal and corners, and seemed to have the momentum heading into halftime.

York came out in the second half with two shots in the first 10 minutes, including one on goal. However, Messiah matched York's offensive efforts within that same time span and in the 57th minute the Falcons finally broke through for the game's fist tally.

Less than a minute after the game's first tally, Messiah notched another goal that broke the spirits of their visiting nonconference rivals.

The Falcons would go on to tally three more scores as frustration set in for the York side.

The Messiah offense dominated the second half, out-shooting the Spartans 14-2 on its way to a final shot margin of 21-8. The two teams drew even in corner kicks with three each.

Senior midfielder Yawo Baah (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) led the Spartans with three shots, two of which were on target.

York will look to regroup as it will host No. 12 Christopher Newport in its conference opener on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
