Spartans Secure Second Consecutive Overtime Victory

Box Score

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa – For the second time in as many games the York College field hockey team exited overtime as the victors as the Spartans defeated Elizabethtown 2-1 on the road on Wednesday evening.

York (6-1) relied on its leading scorer, freshman Ali Posey (Airville, Pa./Red Lion), to drive home the game-winner at just over three minutes into overtime. Posey collected the ball on the left side of the circle, squared up and ripped a shot to the right to beat the goalie.

Elizabethtown (2-4) brought early offensive pressure, scoring a goal midway through the first half and finishing the half with the advantage in both shots and penalty corners.

As they have done numerous times this season, the young Spartans did not seemed fazed by the early pressure their opponent supplied and tied the game with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

Alexa Taylor (York, Pa./Red Lion) set up on the right post and deflected in a pass across the goal mouth from Shania Gelvin (Hustontown, Pa./Forbes Road) for the equalizer.

Through the second half, the Spartans continued to get out-shot and fell further behind in penalty corner opportunities, but they displayed true determination and grit as they weathered the storm and forced the game into overtime where their toughness eventually paid off.

Elizabethtown produced a 13-8 margin in total shots, in addition to a 15-5 advantage in penalty corners.

With the win, York pulled a historical upset as the Spartans improve to 6-24-1 all-time against the Blue Jays. The win also marks the best start (6-1) through seven games since going 7-0 in 2000.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they return home to face King's College at 1 p.m. at Kinsley Field.
