Lukacz Brilliant as Spartans Fall in Overtime at Gettysburg

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, PA – Gettysburg College's Georgia Ferguson blasted home a shot from just outside the box to give the Bullets a 1-0 overtime win over York College on Wednesday night in Gettysburg.

The two teams have been incredibly close in their recent series as the last three matches have gone to overtime and the last four have been decided by one goal.

Gettysburg improves to 3-2 while the Spartans are now 3-2-1.

The Spartans entered the match minus All-American goalkeeper Melanie Glessner (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) who was held out of the game due to an injury. However, back up goalie Stevi Lukacz (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) was more than up to the task as she was brilliant in the tough one-goal overtime loss.

The play was even in the first half with both squads managing to register four shots while the Bullets held a 3-1 margin in corner kicks.

THe pace of play picked up as the second half wore on. The Spartans had a good chance in the 68th minute as Taylor Folk (Beavertown, Pa./Midd-West) hit a bullet towards the Gettysburg goal. Unfortunately for York, the shot was right at Gettysburg net minder Eliza Grey who snatched it for the save.

The Bullets had a four shot flurry that covered just under 20 seconds in the 69th minute. Lukacz registered three saves in the onslaught with the other shot being blocked as the game remained scoreless.

The Spartans' Shyanne Kimbrough (York, Pa./West York) had a direct kick just outside of the box in the final minute of regulation but her attempt sailed high of the mark as the squads headed to an extra session.

The Bullets got the game winner with 2:21 remaining in the first overtime as Ferguson converted a pass from Molly Phillips. Ferguson's shot tucked in the upper left 90 as the Bullets beat the Spartans in heartbreaking fashion.

Spartan head coach Vicki Sterner was proud of the play of her side.

"It was a very physical game and it really had the intensity of a post-season game," said Sterner. "We had our opportunities and I thought we played well. Stevi was outstanding. We are very fortunate to have such a strong goalie behind Mel. Despite the loss, I thought there were a number of positives in the game."

Lukacz made seven saves in her 97:39 of work. She allowed the one goal as she falls to 0-1. Gray earned the win as she registered three saves.

The Bullets finished the game outshooting York 15-10 including 9-3 in shots on goal. Gettysburg also had a 7-2 margin in corner kicks.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they host Goucher College in a non-conference contest. Game time is slated for 12:30 pm at Graham Field.
