Box Score YORK, Pa. – It was the first career game-winning goal for junior Holly Martin (Hanover, Pa./South Western) that lifted York over Juniata by a final score of 2-1 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Kinsley Field.
In an outstanding back-and-forth battle, both York (5-1) and Juniata (2-2) displayed grit and determination on both ends of the field, as neither team seemed to back down from the other.
Eventually, with 9:30 remaining in the overtime period, Martin shattered any hopes of an Eagle victory as she maneuvered her way into a prime shooting position on the left side of the circle and unleashed a bullet to the lower right corner of the cage to notch the game-winner.
Despite being out-shot 4-1 in overtime, it was just that one shot the Spartans needed to come out victorious.
York stepped on the field with winning intentions and notched the first goal of the game midway through the first half. Similar to Martin's goal, freshman Ali Posey (Airville, Pa./Red Lion) set up on the left side of the circle and ripped a rocket shot of her own to the lower right corner. Posey now has a team-leading six goals in five games while also leading the team with 14 points and ranks third in the Capital Athletic Conference in points and goals.
The Eagles were also relentless in their attack and were able to notch the equalizer just minutes before halftime as Allison Groft tipped in a shot from the point by Tori Buser.
Freshman Jessica Everett (Windsor, Pa./Red Lion) turned in a stellar performance in goal for York as she made nine saves and allowed just one goal as she faced 16 total shots and turned away numerous quality scoring chances for Juniata.
Juniata out-shot York 16-11 and claimed a 11-6 advantage in penalty corners. York's offense displayed accuracy and quality shot selection as 10 of its 11 total shots were on goal.
The Spartans return to the field on Wednesday as they travel to non-conference neighbor Elizabethtown for a 4:30 p.m. start time.
