Box Score YORK, Pa. – The York College men's soccer team recorded its first victory of the season with a 2-1 win over Alvernia University on Wednesday evening at Graham field.
An early second-half goal by junior Peter Lundgaard (Greenville, Del./Salesianum) to put York (1-1-2) up 2-0 proved to be the game-winner as Alvernia (3-2) notched a tally in the 79th minute, but was unable to do any further damage.
The goal by Lundgaard, his second of the season, was set up by junior Christopher Saberton (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum), who maneuvered his way up the left side and fed a pass back to the middle. Lundgaard collected the pass and ripped a solid shot to the lower right corner.
The Spartans also managed a tally in the first half on a beautifully executed flying header by junior Brendan Saberton (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum). The play was started by junior Ryan Donahue (York, Pa./York Suburban) who served a cross from the right side of the box to connect with the head of Saberton on the backside post.
Sophomore goalkeeper Charlie Johnson (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) turned in a sensational performance in goal for the Spartans. Johnson's two saves came at crucial times as both shots were from well inside the box and could have easily gone in the opposition's favor.
York out-shot Alvernia 10-9, while the two squads drew even in corner kicks with four each.
York will return to action on Saturday as the Spartans play host to Susquehanna at 2:00 p.m. from Graham Field.
