Spartan Effort Not Enough in 1-0 Loss to CNU

Box Score

YORK, Pa. – The York College women's soccer team put together a spirited effort and battled every step of the way in its contest against Christopher Newport in front of the home crowd on Fall Fest Weekend, but came up on the losing end of a 1-0 deficit to the visiting Captains on Saturday afternoon.

York (5-3-2, 1-1 CAC) came out of the gates strong and looked to put CNU (6-2-2, 2-0) on its heals early as a sudden strike from senior Jordan Snook (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) in the third minute of play forced Captain keeper Haley Casanova to make a sprawling save to prevent CNU from falling into an early deficit.

YCP also started the second half on a positive note, forcing a corner kick in the 53rd minute. Sure-footed senior Traci Mohl (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon Catholic) served the ball into the box to find the waiting head of sophomore Jordan Neiheiser (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) who put a good strike on the ball, but sent her header just inches over the crossbar.

The Spartans competed hard through out the game and were able to muster up nine total shots, four of which were on goal. Unfortunately, they were not able to maximize quality scoring chances and most of their shots on target ended up being easily secured by CNU's Casanova.

Both Snook and freshman Maxine Herman (York, Pa./Dover) led the Spartan attack with three shots each.

CNU held the advantage in both shots (11-9) and corner kicks (6-3).

Standout senior goalkeeper Melanie Glessner (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) turned away six Captain shots on goal, while allowing just one to get by.

The Spartans will have a quicker turn around than usual in preparation for their next contest which will be held at Graham Field on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. against CAC opponent Marymount (Va.).
