Spartans Suffer Setback At St. Mary's

Box Score

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The York College field hockey team was unable to overcome an early two-goal deficit on the road on Saturday as York lost 2-0 to conference foe St. Mary's (Md.).

The Seahawks (8-3, 2-0 CAC) tallied their first goal 2:34 into the contest following a scrum in front of the cage. SMC tacked on another goal to extend its lead to 2-0 just before the midway point of the first half.

York (10-3, 1-1) battled throughout the first half in an attempt to climb back into the game, but the Spartan efforts were stifled. YCP tallied eight first-half shots, four of which found their way on goal, and the Spartans held a 5-4 lead in penalty corners through the first stanza.

The Green and White continued to fight back in the second half, trying erase the thin 2-0 lead St. Mary's had built as the Spartans out-shot the Seahawks 6-3.

York's efforts would finally be rewarded in the 57th minute when the team's third-leading scorer freshman Autumn Mallory (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) poked in a loose ball for her sixth goal of the season.

Facing a one-goal deficit with over ten minutes left to play, York failed to capitalize on the opportunity as St. Mary's held the Spartans without a single shot and secured the victory.

York finished the game out-shooting the Seahawks 14-12 while the two squads drew even in penalty corners with seven each.

York will return to play at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday at home in a nonconference contest against Alvernia.
