Spartans Stunned By Early OT Loss

Box Score

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – After battling back from a 2-0 first-half deficit, the York College men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat just 52 seconds into overtime on the road at Mary Washington.

Following a pedestrian first half in which York (4-5-4, 1-2-1 CAC) only compiled four shots, none of which were on goal, the Spartans looked to flip the script in the second 45.

The Spartans were able to turn the tides, scoring two second-half goals and forced the game into OT.

Similar to how Mary Washington (5-6-2, 2-2) tallied an early first-half goal, York notched a tally just over five minutes into the second half.

It was Greg Bechard (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) who tallied the first goal for York, as he was set up by Brendan Saberton (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum).

York displayed a different attitude in the second stanza as the Spartans nearly doubled their first-half shot total with seven and five of those shots were on goal.

YCP's improved second-half efforts were rewarded again as Peter Lundgaard (Greenville, Del./Salesianum) notched the game's equalizer in the 85th minute. Saberton once again received credit for the helper.

With the tides seemingly turned in York's favor, the Spartans abruptly took an unexpected trip into the heartbreak hotel as the Eagles tallied the stunning game-winner just 52 seconds into the overtime period.

The Spartans will have to shake off the feelings of this disappointing loss as they head into the second leg of their current three-game conference road trip when they travel to Frostburg on Wednesday for a 5:00 p.m. contest.
