Big First Half Propels Eastern Past Spartans on Wednesday

Box Score

YORK, PA – The Eastern University Eagles recorded their first-ever men's soccer victory over York College, 4-1, in a non-conference contest at Graham Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Eagles improve to 7-2 overall while the Spartans fall to 3-3-4.

The Spartans dominated the opening seven minutes of the game as they fired off five shots in that opening run of play. The Spartans had a golden opportunity in the opening minute. Senior Yawo Baah (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) struck shot off a beautiful cross that just grazed the outside of the left post as York couldn't capitalize on the golden opportunity.

The Eagles regained their footing and began attacking the Spartan defense. They got on the board in the 11th minute as Jair Saenz crossed a ball into the Spartan box. The pass found the head of Benjamin Barnhart who snapped a vicious header into the back of the net for his fifth goal of the year.

The Eagles added a second goal in the 33rd minute when Josh Cirocco collected a loose ball in the box and hit a blistering shot past Spartan netminder Jack Pebole (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) for the 2-0 Eagle lead.

Eastern tacked on a third goal off a throw in in the 39th minute. John Remsburg placed a big throw in from the left sideline into the box. The throw found the head of Jadon Ramsing who flicked the ball home for the goal.

The Eagles continued their offensive onslaught in the 54th minute as Saenz struck a corner that again found the head of Ramsing as the 6-1 midfielder knocked home his second goal of the game and his fourth of the year.

York spoiled the Eastern shutout in the 74th minute when freshman Ryan Phelps (North Beach, Md./Northern) collected a ball along the flank dribbled into the box and finished off the chance for his second goal in as many games for the Green and White.

The Eagles finished the game with an 18-13 advantage in shots including a 7-3 margin in shots on goal. Eastern had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks in the win.

Jamie Stratton earned the win in goal for Eastern as he notched a pair of saves in his 90 minutes of action. Pebole surrendered four goals as he made three saves for the Green and White.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Marymount University in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. The game is set for a 3:00 pm start and will be a part of the York College Fall Fest Weekend.
