Box Score ELIZABETHTOWN, PA – The York College women's soccer
squad battled the Elizabethtown College Blue Jays to a scoreless
draw in non-conference action on Wednesday evening in
Elizabethtown, PA. The Spartans are now 0-2-1, while the Blue Jays
stand at 2-0-1 for the 2010 campaign.
The play was even a majority of the evening as both teams
managed three first half shots with one of those attempts coming on
target. The Blue Jays did hold a 5-0 bulge in corner kicks in the
opening 45 minutes.
The Spartans held a slight 7-6 edge in second half shots and a
4-3 margin in shots on goal. York also had a 3-2 advantage in
corner kicks in the period. There was some drama in the
79th minute as there was a pair of red cards, leaving
the two teams to play 10-on-10 the remainder of the game.
The Blue Jays got the first scoring chance in the opening
overtime period as Laura Wingert attempted a shot that was saved by
Spartan keeper Sarah Spanarkel. The Spartans
responded with a Stephanie Mergler header that was
turned back by Blue Jay goalie Jess Manchak in the 94th
minute of play.
The Spartans got back-to-back shots in the 106th
minute as Mergler and Carly Bock each had an
attempt. Mergler's shot was saved while Bock's shot was
not on target. Spanarkel preserved the clean sheet and the tie in
the 107th minute as she saved a Kelsey Boehmer shot.
Spanarkel registered six saves in her first shutout of the year.
Manchak recorded seven stops in her shutout.
The Spartans outshot the Blue Jays 13-11 while Elizabethtown
held an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.
York makes their 2010 home debut on Saturday afternoon when they
host Stevenson University in the Capital Athletic Conference opener
for both squads. Kick off is slated for 12:00 pm.
