Box Score YORK, Pa. – The York College field hockey squad suffered
their second loss of the year on Tuesday, falling 3-1 to #20
Gettysburg on a steamy Kinsley Field. The Spartans drop to 1-2 on
the campaign while the Bullets improve to 1-1.
The visiting Gettysburg side opened the scoring 10:52 into the
contest via a Sarah Cole tally. Cole's second goal of the
year came after a scrum in front of the Spartan cage as the ball
sprung free ever-so-slightly to allow Cole to bury it inside the
left post.
Less than 12 minutes later, Nicole Meredyth found the back of
the cage to give the Bullets a 2-0 advantage. Kelly Spieker knocked
a pass from the right side of the field to the far left post.
Meredyth narrowly beat a Spartan defender by mere inches finding
enough daylight to slip it just inside the cage.
Hayward Sawers would complete Gettysburg's scoring at
44:58 with her first tally of the season. This time, Cole was on
the distributing end as she found Sawers along the left side of the
goal for the visitors' third goal of the game.
The Spartans would spoil the Bullets' efforts for a
shutout however, as Sandee Reich tallied in the 68th minute of
play. Senior Allison Roush flipped up a long pass from the right
side to the talented sophomore at the left post. After bouncing
through the circle, Reich got her stick to the ball for the finish
– her team-leading third goal of 2010.
For the game, Gettysburg posted a 17-3 lead in shots while also
taking a 5-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Spartan goalkeeper Maggie Schlauch suffers the loss despite
making eleven saves. The Green and White also tallied a pair of
defensive saves courtesy of Becky Reeves and Danielle Gaitings.
Megan Feeg secures the win in the Gettysburg cage as she made one
save over her 70 minutes of work.
York will now look to quickly recover as they begin their 2010
Capital Athletic Conference slate on Thursday. The Spartans are set
to host Stevenson in a 4:30 pm tilt at York's Kinsley
Field.
