Box Score YORK, Pa. – On a breezy September afternoon, the York
College field hockey squad exploded offensively posting a 6-0
triumph over visiting Albright on Saturday in York. The Spartans
effectively avenge their season-opening loss and improve to 1-1
while the Lions drop to 0-2 to start the year.
Sandee Reich
led the Green and White with two goals on the day, her first and
second tallies of the 2010 campaign. The sophomore connected well
with line mate Allison Roush who
distributed the assist on both of Reich notches.
Her first score came as York's second of the match, 15:32 into the
game. Roush slipped a nifty short pass to Reich along the left side
of the cage allowing Reich to hammer home the goal. Reich's second
came over 33 minutes later when she finished off a gorgeous
connection of passes from Katie Dawkins to
Roush to Reich.
In addition to her pair of helpers, Roush tallied a score of her
own, after a beautiful long pass from Colleen O'Rourke.
O'Rourke won the ball from an Albright corner and carried it up to
left side of midfield before launching a pin-point pass to a
sprinting Roush on the right. Roush dribbled to the Albright cage
before ripping a strike that found the top of the goal.
The game-winner however, came just 6:41 into the game from rookie
Kailey
Brewer. Brewer, who drew a start at forward for the second time
in her first two games, hammered home York's first of the day and
the first of her collegiate career. Dawkins hit a shot that was
initially saved by Lion goalkeeper Marguerite DeLucas but the
ensuing rebound spilled right to Brewer. The Spartan newcomer
calmly hammered home the goal that would prove to be the only one
the Green and White would need on this day.
Senior Casey
Lawrence and freshman Jillian Brezgel
also got in on the scoring act. Lawrence posted her first tally of
the season at the 18:55 mark. After inserting a corner, the ball
eventually found its way to the right post where the awaiting
Lawrence lifted her shot into the back of the cage for the
Spartans' third goal of the afternoon.
Brezgel went on to notch York's fourth 43 minutes into the game.
The rookie won the ball in the Green and White's offensive third
and then slipped a pass to Dawkins along the left side of the cage.
As with her earlier attempt, Dawkins' shot ricocheted off DeLucas
allowing Brezgel to finish the rebound.
For the game, the Spartans outshot their visitors 20-4 while the
Lions held a slight 5-4 edge in penalty corners.
Senior goalkeeper Maggie Schlauch
picks up the shutout victory as she played all 70 minutes and made
one save. DeLucas suffers the loss despite making nine saves
throughout the match.
The Green and White return to action on Tuesday, September 7, when
they host Gettysburg in a 4:30 pm non-conference tilt.
