Box Score READING, PA – The York College field hockey squad dropped
their 2010 opener at Alvernia University, falling to the Crusaders
3-1 on Wednesday evening. Alvernia now stands at 1-0 while the
Spartans are 0-1. The Spartans opened their 2009 season with a loss
to the Crusaders.
The two teams were knotted at the half despite Alvernia holding
a significant 10-4 edge in first half shots. Spartan goalie Maggie
Schlauch was solid in the first half with six saves.
The Crusaders struck first just 4:15 into the second half as
Katy Eby found the back of the cage off a feed from Kyle Dillman.
Alvernia pushed it to 2-0 and Dillman was the middle of it again,
earning another assist, this one on a pass to Samantha Landis who
sent the ball through Schlauch for the score with 11:26 remaining
in regulation.
The Spartans wasted little time in responding as Sandee Reich found Allison Roush
for York's first goal of the season. The goal came a mere 12
seconds after Landis' goal gave the Crusaders a 2-0 lead.
Unfortunately for York, they could not draw any closer as
Alvernia got a big insurance goal from Eby off a pass from Landis
with 7:44 remaining in the game.
Abby Eby earned the win in goal for Alvernia. She registered
five stops in the win. Schlauch had seven saves as she was tagged
with the loss.
Alvernia finished the game with a 20-9 edge in shots and a 12-8
margin in penalty corners.
The Spartans make their 2010 home debut when they host Albright
on Saturday, September 4, in a 1:00 pm non-conference contest at
Kinsley Field.
