Box Score MILLVILLE, Pa. – The York College men's soccer squad
opened up their 2010 campaign in exciting fashion on Wednesday with
a 1-0 overtime triumph against Susquehanna. The Spartans picked up
their game-one victory at Millville High School's Millard C. Ludwig
Memorial Stadium. The Crusaders begin the year with a 0-1 mark.
Justin
Facer provided the heroics for the Green and White as his first
collegiate goal proved a meaningful one.
With just over three minutes remaining in the first 10-minute
extra session, standout sophomore Antonio Bua played a
low service from the left side of the field across the face of the
Susquehanna goal. Spartan senior forward Mike O'Connell ran
onto the service looking for the game-winner but his sliding
attempt came up just short. However, O'Connell's effort provided
just enough of a distraction to allow Facer to run toward the back
post and one-time a the skipped ball back across the goal and into
the upper left side netting.
"I saw (Bua) take the guy down to the line…I just
followed up on the far post," Facer commented post game. "The ball
skipped in, hit the ground, and I just took it off the volley."
After a few anxious moments in the first half, the Spartans took
control of the match throughout the latter portion of the first 45
minutes. The Green and White fired off eight shots in the period,
two of which were cleared off the line by Susquehanna
defenders.
The second half saw the Spartans continue to take the game to
the Crusaders, rattling off five attempts throughout the frame.
However, York was unable to find the back of the net, setting up
Facer's game-winning overtime tally.
For the match, the York side posted 15 shots to Susquehanna's
five while also leading in corner kicks 8-4.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jesse Derksen
picked up the win in goal as he made three saves on the evening.
Crusader netminder B.J. Merriam made six stops.
The Spartans have now competed in seven regular season contests
at Ludwig Memorial Stadium. Including this most-recent victory,
York now owns a flawless 7-0-0 record at Ludwig.
The Green and White return to action on Saturday, September 4.
York travels to Cabrini for a 1:00 pm non-conference tilt.
