STEVENSON, MD – The York College women's basketball
team received another huge effort from junior April
Sparkman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) as the Spartans
posted a hard-fought 56-48 win at Stevenson University on Wednesday
night in Stevenson, MD. Sparkman, who has been riding a hot streak
of late, tallied a career-high 33 points as the Spartans earned the
victory.
The Spartans remain alive in the hunt for a
first round CAC Tournament home game as they improve to 11-13
overall and 7-8 in the CAC. The win also avenges the
Mustangs' first program victory over the Spartans in January.
The Mustangs fall to 5-17 overall and 3-12 in the CAC.
Sparkman started the game with a three ball
just 13 seconds into the game. The Mustangs eventually forged a few
leads in the first half as their final lead came at 13-12 with 6:41
remaining in the half. The Spartans proceeded to smack the Mustangs
with a 15-2 run keyed by 12 points from Sparkman while Dija
Mitchell (Bel Air, Md./Mercy) added another triple in the
spurt. The Mustangs scored the final five points of the half to
trail 27-20 at the intermission.
The Spartans pushed the lead back to double
digits on a Sparkman three-point play early in the half. The Green
and White increased the lead to 13 on a Jess Kramer
(Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) bucket with 10:48
remaining in the game. The Mustangs were undeterred as they
responded to Kramer's basket with a 13-4 run. That cut the
Spartan lead to just four at 43-39 with only 4:38 left. York
increased the lead back to seven before the Mustangs scored four
straight to trim the Spartan lead to three with 2:15 left. York
responded by ending the game on a 10-5 run that provided the Green
and White with the eight-point win.
Sparkman recorded her third straight
double-double with the career-high 33 points while she also pulled
in 12 rebounds. She was 13-for-18 from the field, 4-for-7 from
three and 3-for-5 from the charity stripe. Sparkman now has ten
double-doubles in 21 games played this year. Junior captain
Jaimie Sapp (Bluemont, Va./Loudon Valley) was the
other Spartan in double figures with 10 points while she also had
six rebounds. Senior Jamie Polan (York, Pa./West
York) handed out seven assists while she also had four
points and three steals for York.
Vanessa Rice led Stevenson with 13 points and
five rebounds. Rice was 5-for-11 including 3-for-8 from three.
Daniela Poss was the other Mustang in double figures with 10
points. Rayshell Parker paced Stevenson with nine rebounds while
she also had nine rebounds.
York finished the game shooting 43.2% from the
floor and 33.3% from three. The Spartans went a chilly 59.1% from
the free throw line as all 22 of their attempts came in the second
half. Stevenson converted just 32.1% of their shots from the field
while they managed just 19.2% (5-of-26) from three. The Mustangs
made 7-of-10 from the line for the game.
Both teams had 36 rebounds in the game but
York held a 13-8 advantage in second chance points.
The Spartans close out their regular season on
Saturday with a trip to St. Mary's. That contest will be
pivotal in determining if the Green and White will have home court
advantage in next week's first round CAC Tournament game. Tip
time in St. Mary's City is set for 2:00 pm.
