Box Score YORK, PA – Three different players scored as the York
College Field Hockey squad recorded a solid 3-1 non-conference
victory over Dickinson College on an overcast Tuesday afternoon in
York. The Spartans improve to 6-5 for the campaign while the Red
Devils fall to 2-8 in 2010.
The Spartans carried the play early as they fired off the first
four shots of the game. The fourth shot found the back of the cage
as sophomore Sandee Reich collected a rebound off
a Casey Lawrence shot and slipped the ball past
Dickinson goalie Katy Schlechtweg for the 1-0 lead. The goal is
Reich's team-leading seventh of the year and came just 10:51
into the game.
The Red Devils immediately called timeout and their offense came
to life. Dickinson managed to squeeze off six consecutive shots as
they applied heavy pressure to sophomore Lydia Pirie, who was making her first collegiate start in place
of senior Maggie Schlauch, who missed the game due
to injury.
Pirie got some help from her defense as Colleen O'Rourke notched two defensive saves while
Becky Reeves also had a first half defensive
save.
After a flurry of Dickinson offensive opportunities, the
Spartans got a great counter just 1:14 prior to the half. On a
penalty corner, Reich fed the ball to Lawrence at the top of the
circle. Lawrence's pass was tipped by Brittany Simmons to Jillian Brezgel who finished
the chance inside the left post for the 2-0 Spartan lead. The goal
was Brezgel's fourth of the year.
York took the 2-0 lead to the half despite being outshot 11-6
and being out-cornered 9-3 in the opening 35 minutes of play.
The Red Devils continued their offensive push in the second half
and finally found the back of the cage with 27:31 remaining in the
game. Lizzie Boorse hit a bullet that Lauren Wyman tipped in to
beat Pirie and get the Red Devils on the board.
The Spartans wasted little time in pushing the lead back to a
pair as Kailey Brewer hit an odd angle shot that
crossed Schlechtweg's face and tucked inside the far left
post for the goal. The tally is Brewer's third of the year
and came 5:35 after the Dickinson goal.
The Green and White survived the final 22 minutes of the game to
preserve the win and snap their two-match losing streak.
Pirie was strong in her first start as she recorded 12 saves in
her 70 minutes of work to post the win. Schlechtweg suffered the
loss as she allowed three goals and made three saves in her 70
minutes of action.
The Red Devils finished the game holding a 20-11 edge in total
shots, a 16-6 edge in shots on goal and a 14-7 bulge in penalty
corners.
The Spartans return to action on Thursday afternoon when they
host Wilson College in a non-conference contest. Game time at
Kinsley Field is set for 4:30 pm.
