Box Score SALISBURY, MD – The York College men's soccer team posted
a crucial 1-0 Capital Athletic Conference victory at Salisbury
University on Saturday afternoon. The win earns the Spartans the
2010 Capital Athletic Conference regular season crown and also the
number one seed in the upcoming CAC post-season tournament.
York improves to 14-4 overall and 7-0 in the conference while
the Sea Gulls fall to 12-3-1 overall and 6-2 in the league.
The Sea Gulls had the first good opportunity of the game in the
8th minute as Stafford Chipungu had a break away
opportunity but his shot just slid over the cross bar resulting in
a Spartan goal kick.
The Green and White got a chance in the 12th minute
as Mike
Gill flicked a header on goal after a throw in but
Salisbury goalie John Vnenchak made the save to keep the game
scoreless.
The Spartans got the game's lone goal in the 17th
minute as sophomore Antonio Bua
lofted a shot from 35 yards out. A Salisbury defender had the ball
carom off him into the goal near post as the Green and White took
the early lead. The goal is Bua's third tally of the year.
Things got a little crazy for the Spartans as Gill drew
consecutive yellow cards to earn a red card, leaving the Green and
White down a man for the next 60 minutes of the game until the Sea
Gulls got a red card late in the game.
Spartan junior Kemal
Nuspahic almost made it 2-0 in the 31st
minute off a free kick from the right side, forcing Vnenechak to
make a sprawling save. Salisbury held a 6-4 edge in first half
shots while both teams put three shots on goal in the stanza.
The Sea Gulls had a number of chances in the second half but the
Spartan defense stood tall in capturing the regular season title.
In the 56th minute, Mike Napolitano hit a free kick that
just missed wide of the goal. Salisbury fired off 10 second half
shots but only put two on target as Spartan goalie Jesse
Derksen recorded his eighth shutout of the year.
Salisbury finished the game holding a 16-5 edge in total shots
but just a 5-4 margin in shots on goal. The Sea Gulls had a 6-1
edge in corner kicks.
The game was an extremely physical contest as each team was
whistled for 22 fouls. There were a combined three red cards and a
combined eight yellow cards as the rivalry between the CAC's two
top programs is as intense as ever.
Derksen recorded five saves in the win while Vnenchak suffered
the loss as he recorded three stops for the Sea Gulls.
The Spartans conclude their regular season on Tuesday afternoon
when they host Hood College. The game is preceded by Senior Day
ceremonies as the Spartans will honor their senior players. Kick
off is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
