Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The York College men's soccer team
picked up a significant 2-0 Capital Athletic Conference victory
Wednesday afternoon, besting host Mary Washington in
Fredericksburg, Va. Winners of seven of their last eight games, the
Spartans improve to 11-4 on the season and 5-0 in conference action
while the Eagles drop to 7-3-2 and 2-1-1 in the CAC.
Level at 0-0 through the first half, despite the Green and White
outshooting their hosts 6-1, York got on the board in the match's
63rd minute. Senior forward Mike
O'Connell scored the Spartans' first tally, his third of the
2010 campaign, notching what would eventually become the
game-winner. Pablo Martinez ripped a ball toward goal that the Mary
Washington goalkeeper spilled, allowing O'Connell to knock home the
goal.
A mere 2:15 after O'Connell's opening salvo, Lucas
Emil gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead courtesy of a converted
penalty-kick. Emil, who tallied the second goal of his senior
season, provided a bit of breathing room for the Green and
White.
That breathing room would not be needed however. After Emil's
score, Mary Washington pushed during the final 25 minutes but their
five shots over that time each went for naught. The Spartan defense
held the hosts scoreless, registering York's 10th clean
sheet of the season. Ten of the Green and White's 11 wins this
season have come by way of shutouts.
For the match, the visiting Spartans owned an 11-8 advantage in
shots while each squad recorded three corners.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jesse Derksen
notches his seventh clean sheet of the year as he made one save, a
stop in the game's 85th minute. Alec Constantine notched
one save as well over his 90 minutes of work.
York returns to action on Saturday, October 16, when they travel
to Dover, Del. for another CAC contest. The Spartans are scheduled
for a 6:00 pm tilt against the Wesley College Wolverines.
