Box Score YORK, Pa. – The York College women's soccer team picked up
a huge Capital Athletic Conference win Tuesday, 3-1 over Marymount
(Va.) University at Graham Field. The Spartans improve to 5-8-1
overall and 5-2 in conference action while the Saints fall to 4-7
and 2-4 in the CAC.
The Green and White came out firing in the first half of play,
recording 13 shots and sending one them to paydirt. Spartan
senior Erin
Mummert tallied her first goal of the season when she knocked
in a rebound in the game's 30th minute. After a shot
from teammate Lacey Phillips
deflected off the hands of Marymount goalkeeper Gabriella Prellezo,
the senior forward alertly finished off the Spartans first goal of
the gorgeous October afternoon.
York continued their dominance in the second half when junior
forward Lauren
Ward knocked in another deflected shot in the match's
49th minute. Senior forward Ali Jones took a shot
that Prellezo was unable to hang onto as Ward promptly hammered
home the Green and White's second to go up 2-0.
Later, in the 86th minute, the Spartans would find
the back of the net for a third time. A well-placed corner
kick from Lauren Fowler
skimmed off the head of a Marymount defender. Megan Arthur knocks
in the loose ball out of mid-air for her first goal of the
season.
Marymount spoiled York's bid for a clean sheet in the
88th minute, but it would prove too little too late for
the Saints. Stephanie Flood connected with Paige Pierson who
finished into the left side of the Spartan goal for their team's
only goal. Pierson, Marymount's top goal scorer, recorded her
13th goal of the season on the play.
Sarah
Spanarkel picks up the win as she registered three saves and no
goals allowed in her 73 minutes of play. Sophomore Katie Meehan
relieved Spanarkel and played the final 16:55 for the Green and
White. Prellezo takes the loss as she amassed a total of 12 saves
but, also relinquished three goals along the way.
The Spartans outshot the Saints 25-5 and dominated the corner
kicks with a margin of 9-3.
The Green and White return to action on Thursday, October 14 as
the women travel to non-conference neighbor Gettysburg. Game time
is slated for 7:00 pm.
