YORK, PA – The York College men's basketball team
returned to Wolf Gym after a tough three game road swing and rolled
to an 88-58 Capital Athletic Conference win over Stevenson
University on Saturday evening in York. The Spartans improve to
13-3 overall and 5-2 in the CAC while the Mustangs fall to 1-5 in
the league and 1-14 overall.
The Spartans trailed early but Nick
Brady (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) drained a triple to
tie the score at eight and start a 15-2 run that gave the Spartans
a 20-10 lead midway through the opening half. After
Stevenson's Danny Murphy hit a jumper to draw the Mustangs to
within eight, the Spartans embarked on another run, this time they
outscored their guests 8-1 to increase the lead to 15 at 28-13.
York continued to defend well and carve up the Mustang defense as
they finished the final 1:59 of the half on a 7-0 run that
increased their halftime lead to 27 at 46-19.
The Mustangs showed some fight coming out of
the half as they cut the Spartan lead to 21 with 16:55 left in the
game. The Green and White responded with a 10-0 run to quickly push
the Spartan advantage up to 31 with just over 12 minutes showing on
the clock. The Spartan lead eventually grew to 38 points before
York settled for the 30-point win.
Brady led the balanced Spartan offensive
attack as the senior tallied a game-high 19 points in addition to a
pair of rebounds and a pair of steals. Brady was 7-for-15 from the
floor including a pair of threes. He converted all three of his
free throws for the game. Junior Kevin Whaley (Dover,
Pa./Dover) was again incredibly efficient offensively as
he poured in 16 points on just 10 shots. Whaley was 6-for-10 from
the floor including 4-for-7 from distance. Whaley also had four
assists with no turnovers in his 25 minutes of action. Senior
captain Jeremy Keefer (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra)
tallied 11 points while he collected six rebounds and notched a
game-high three steals. Junior Dylan Hoffman (Dallastown,
Pa./Dallastown) was the fourth Spartan in double figures
with 10 points. He was 5-for-8 from the floor while he also had
five rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Paul Kouvaris
(Baltimore, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) paced the Spartans on
the glass with eight rebounds while he also had seven points in
just 20 minutes of play. Freshman Mitch Kemp (York,
Pa./York Suburban) led the bench bunch with eight points,
three rebounds, and three assists in his nine minutes of action.
Broderick Hill led the Mustangs with nine
points while Zach Cooke contributed seven points. Clifton Jones and
Andy Shelley each pulled down six rebounds to pace the
Mustangs' rebounding efforts.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 48.6%
from the floor including 39.1% from three. The Spartans only
attempted 15 free throws but canned 11 of those chances including
their last nine in a row.
Stevenson shot 41.2% from the field which was
deceptive because they converted just 7-of-23 (30.4%) in the
decisive first half. The Mustangs made 8-of-21 from deep while they
were just 8-of-16 from the free throw line in the game.
York outrebounded the Mustangs 40-32 in the
contest, snapping a three game stretch where the Spartans were
beaten on the boards by an average of 10 caroms per game. York had
a 13-8 edge in second chance points while they also had a
commanding 42-18 margin in points in the paint.
The Spartans forced 23 turnovers, which they
converted into 21 points while the Green and White committed 13
miscues for the game.
The Spartans now embark on a challenging two
game conference road swing. The Spartans open the trip with a game
at Mary Washington on Wednesday night followed by a trip to Dover,
Delaware to face Wesley on Saturday. Game time on Wednesday night
in Fredericksburg is set for 8:00 pm.
