Box Score YORK, PA-The York College
women's soccer team saw their season-opening three-game
winning streak come to a sudden halt as the Dickinson College Red
Devils handed the Spartans a sobering 5-0 setback in Carlisle, PA
on a dreary Wednesday evening. The Red Devils stayed red hot as
they have outscored their four opponents by a combined score of
21-0 en route to their perfect 4-0 record. The Spartans, who are
ranked fifth in the region, fall to 3-1 overall.
The Red Devils wasted little time in taking the
play to the Spartans as they fired off the first three shots of the
game before finding the back of the net on their fourth shot just
12:33 into the game. Sarah Montminy picked up the unassisted tally
to give the hosts the early lead. Dickinson increased the lead just
1:25 later as Sara White fed Kim Callaghan for the Red
Devils' second tally.
The hosts continued to pressure the Spartan
defense and York broke for a third time in the 23rd minute as
Montminy scored her second goal of the day, this time off a pass
from Genevieve Olson.
York didn't record its first shot until
the 37th minute as the Red Devils outshot the Spartans 11-3 in the
opening 45 minutes of play.
The intermission didn't provide much
relief to the Spartans though they did improve their quality of
play during the second stanza. Red Devil Sara White pushed the
Dickinson lead to 4-0 in the 56th minute with a goal off a feed
from Molly Schaefer.
Credit to the Spartans because the Green and
White didn't quit as they managed four of the next six shots
in an attempt to battle to get themselves back into the contest.
Unfortunately it wasn't in the cards for York as Dickinson
put the final nail in the coffin with a fifth goal in the 74th
minute off the foot of Laurie Luczak.
The Spartans did hold a 10-7 edge in second
half shots but Red Devil goalie Kailyn Hartmann recorded five
second half saves to keep the clean sheet for the hosts. Hartmann
played the first 84:17 of the game and recorded six saves while
Annie Weichert finished the game and was not forced to make a stop.
Sophomore Sarah Spanarkel (Toms River, N.J./Toms River
North) started and played the first half for York as
she surrendered three goals on 11 Red Devil shots. Spanarkel made
three saves in her 45 minutes of work. Freshman Katie
Meehan (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) made her Spartan debut
in the second half and allowed two goals in her 45 minutes in cage.
Meehan did not make a save during her stint for York.
The Red Devils finished the match holding an
18-13 edge in shots, an 8-6 margin in shots on goal and a 7-1 bulge
in corner kicks.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday
afternoon as they host Misericordia University in a non-conference
contest at Graham Field. Kick off is set for 1:00 pm.
