Box Score YORK, PA – The young York College women's basketball
team experienced some growing pains Tuesday evening as the Spartans
fell 62-46 to visiting Gettysburg College in non-conference action.
The Green and White committed 23 turnovers during the 40 minutes
and went cold from the floor in the second half scoring only three
baskets from the floor.
The first half looked promising for the Spartans (3-2) as York
opened up a nine-point advantage at 21-12 midway through the frame.
Junior guard April Sparkman (Walkersville,
Md./Walkersville) tallied nine of her team-high 20 points
during the first 10 minutes of play.
Gettysburg (3-0) began to chip away at York's lead as they
eventually cut the Spartan's margin to one at 31-30 with 2:12
remaining in the stanza. A layup by Julie McGrory with 1:53 left
gave the visitors their first lead since 12-11 at the 12:38 mark.
That lead would grow to seven for the Bullets as they finished the
half's final 6:12 on an 18-4 run, including a 12-0 spurt over
the last 2:34, to go into the locker room with a 38-31
advantage.
York looked to dissipate the Bullet lead early in the second frame.
The Spartans cut the margin to a mere three just 30 seconds into
the half after a Sparkman traditional three-point play.
Following a brief Gettysburg run, Jaimie Sapp (Bluemont,
Va./Loudoun Valley) went on a 4-0 run of her own to cut
the lead to only four points with 17:13 remaining. However, that
would be as close as the Spartans would get throughout the rest of
the game.
Gettysburg steadily built their lead, growing their advantage to as
much as 17 on two occasions. The Spartans were never able to find
their rhythm, finishing out the final 14:40 without recording a
field goal.
For the game, the Bullets' Caitlin Moser led all scorers 24
points on a 10-for-22 performance adding 4-of-5 from the free throw
line. Drechsler posted 14 points and four assists while Sara
Kinsley grabbed 10 rebounds. In total, Gettysburg held a
significant edge on the glass outrebounding York 51-35.
Sparkman led the Green and White offensively with 20 points while
grabbing 13 rebounds to register her third-straight double-double.
Senior guard Jamie Polan (York, Pa./West York)
also reached double figures with 11 while ripping three steals.
Sapp tallied nine points for York and collected five caroms.
The Spartans will look to get back in the win column on Sunday,
November 29, as they travel to Johns Hopkins. Tip-off from
Baltimore, Md. is slated for 2:00 p.m.
