YORK, PA – The #5 York College men's soccer team was
all smiles on Saturday's Spartan Senior Day as the Green and
White upended visiting St. Mary's 6-0 in Capital Athletic
Conference action. The Spartans (12-1-4, 5-0-2 CAC) post their
second highest offensive output of 2009 against the Seahawks (4-12,
2-6 CAC) en route to their 12th win of the season - the
seventh consecutive year York has won at least contests.
Following a lightning delay and the Senior Day
festivities that could have caused both squads to come out
sluggish, the Green and White posted their first of the day just
17:20 into the match. Senior Justin Suchoski (Langhorne,
Pa./Neshaminy) found fellow senior Jon Ports
(Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) along the right endline. Ports
deftly slid a ball across the wet turf finding Mike
O'Connell (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) who
touched home his eighth goal of the season, a score which would
prove to be the eventual game-winner.
Just 43 seconds later, the Spartans notched
their second of game as Ports once again garnered the assist. From
the left endline on this occasion, the two-time All-American
slipped a cross to senior midfielder Travis Williams
(Springfield, Pa./Springfield Township) in front of the
Seahawk net. Williams wasted no time before hammering home his
sixth goal of the season.
York would add to their tally once more before
the end of frame as Antonio Bua (Lancaster,
Pa./Laupeter-Strasburg) cracked the score sheet with his
second of 2009. Eric Mackin (Moyock, N.C./Currituck
County) played an exceptional long ball from the left side
of the pitch to an open Bua who collected the service at the top
right corner of the Seahawk penalty area. The freshman standout
blasted his attempt to the far post, finding left side netting to
put York up 3-0.
In the 73rd minute, Ports played a
fantastic long through-ball to an on-running Bua. As the Spartan
rookie attempted a cut-back move in the box, he was fouled by a
Seahawk defender resulting in a penalty-kick opportunity for the
Spartans. As he had done three times previously this season,
Williams stepped to the spot and buried the attempt to notch his
seventh of the year.
The Spartans were not done however, as
Lucas Emil (Parsippany, N.J./Morris Catholic)
scored a beautiful goal in the 81st minute of play.
After collecting the ball 35 yards straight out from the Seahawk
goal, Emil quickly slipped a pair of defenders before unleashing a
brilliant deep attempt that tucked inside the left post.
Emil's score gave the junior his third of the season and the
Green and White a 5-0 advantage.
With five seconds remaining in the match,
Seth Hurley (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown West)
completed York's offensive outburst. Following a saved shot,
Hurley calmly collected the ball on the right side of the goal,
waited patiently for the opportune moment, then unleashed a
rocketed left foot attempt that sailed by St. Mary's Matt
Savopoulous for the sophomore's first score of the year.
The Green and White used all 25 players on
their roster for this match, providing some of the younger Spartans
a quality opportunity to see increased minutes.
For the match, the Spartans outshot their
guests by a 25-5 margin, owning an 8-4 lead in corner kicks.
Ryan Hock (Brookeville,
Md./Sherwood) picks up the win in goal for the Green and
White as he made one save over his 75:25 of work. Kyle
Connolly (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) relieved Hock for the
final 14:35 and was not forced to make a stop. Despite the lopsided
final, Seahawk starter Paul Spranklin played well for the visitors.
He recorded six saves, including several quality stops, as well as
cutting off numerous dangerous opportunities. Savopoulos finished
the final 14:35 for St. Mary's making two saves.
In recognition of Spartan Senior Day, the 2009
senior class of Ports, Williams, Suchoski, Hock, Scott
Becker (Hockessin, Del./Salesianum), Aaron Good
(Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area), and Brett
Sauerberger (Little Silver, N.J./Monmouth Regional) have
been apart of some of the best seasons in the 40-year history of
men's soccer at York College. Since the 2006 season, the
Green and White have amassed an incredible 72-4-10 record,
including a 28-1-2 mark in CAC play, while posting a pair of
undefeated seasons (2006, 2008). This class is only the second in
Spartan history to have appeared in the NCAA tournament in each of
their first three campaigns.
York finishes out their 2009 regular season
slate on Wednesday, October 24, as they host league foe Hood
College. The Blazers invade Graham Field for a 3:30 p.m. CAC tilt.
