YORK, PA - The York College field hockey team
(9-6) defeated visiting Elizabethtown College 3-2 in non-conference
action at Kinsley Field Tuesday afternoon. The Spartans displayed
an aggressive offense and a determined defense en route to the
victory.
The Spartans started the scoring during the
fifth minute of the game when junior midfielder Casey
Lawrence (Abbottstown, Pa./ Delone Catholic) directed the
penalty corner to forward Allison Roush (Lancaster, Pa./
Manheim Township) who fired a hard shot to the net. The
ball deflected to Lawrence on the right side who found the back of
the cage for her third goal of the season (4:31).
The Green and White kept the Blue Jays at bay
in the early going, while playing aggressive on both sides of the
ball. The defense kept the Blue Jays out of the net, while the
offense kept the ball pinned in the opposition's zone.
The Blue Jay defense was caught off guard in
the ninth minute of play when junior forward Katie Dawkins
(Easton, Md./ Easton) earned her fourteenth tally of the
season with a two-on-one goal. Dawkins dribbled behind the defense
and passed to Roush who returned the pass to Dawkins for the score
(8:17).
Elizabethtown had multiple opportunities in
the early going, but they could not shake off a stout Spartan
defense. Elizabethtown's Katy Boone dribbled into Spartan
territory where York defender Brittany Simmons (Leola, Pa./
Conestoga Valley) made a great play on the ball to knock
it out of bounds and preserve the 2-0 lead.
After back and forth play, Elizabethtown
pulled within one when Boone picked up a shot rebound from Caitlin
Grimes on a penalty corner and scored her forth goal of the season.
(23:27)
The Spartans held tough at the end of the
first half to hold onto the 2-1 halftime lead. York led shots in
the first stanza 6-4 over visiting Elizabethtown.
York came out in the second half only to add
to their lead when a scurry in front of the net resulted in a Roush
goal. The goal was the junior's eighth of
the season bringing her day's total to a goal and two assists
(37:22).
During the 44th minute, Dawkins was
given a penalty stroke but was denied by a diving save from Blue
Jay goalkeeper Liz Hannegan.
The Blue Jays brought the game back within one
goal in the 45th minute when a hard shot by Martina White was
deflected to Grimes who found the back of the net for her fifth
tally of the season.
Action unfolded in the late going with the
Blue Jays stepping up their attack, yet the Spartan defense stayed
superior. Veronica Eltz (Hanover, Pa./ Delone
Catholic) made a great play when she knocked the ball out
of bounds denying a potential two-on-one advantage.
The final play of the game was spent with
Elizabethtown trying to find the equalizer on a last second penalty
corner. That corner attempt was disrupted by junior Becky
Reeves (Forest Hill, Md./ North Harford) allowing the
clock to expire and the Spartans to grab the 3-2 victory.
The Green and White return to Capital Athletic
Conference action on Thursday, October 15, with play against Wesley
College (10-3, 3-0 CAC). The game is slated for
a 7:00 p.m. start, where the Spartans will attempt to build onto
last season's 4-3 victory over the Wolverines.
