YORK, PA – The York College women's
soccer team grabbed their second win of the 2008 campaign Wednesday
evening with a 3-0 home victory over Hood. The Spartans first
Capital Athletic Conference game of the season proved fruitful as
the green and white move to 2-0-1 (1-0 CAC), while the Blazers fall
to 0-3 (0-1 CAC).
As has been the case for their previous pair of contests, the
Spartans opened the game and spent much of the first stanza
controlling the pace of play. York possessed well and spent a
majority of the first 45 minutes in Hood's half of the pitch.
However, the Spartans were unable to break through the Blazer
backline for a score.
Freshman striker Lacey Phillips (Pasadena,
Md./Chesapeake Senior) finally snapped the deadlock in the
43rd minute of action. Sophomore Carly Bock (Baltimore,
Md./Catonsville) dribbled to the Blazer end line and slip
a beautiful pass to an open Phillips. The freshman then swiftly
slotted home her first career score off the inside of the far left
post. Phillips' score sent the Spartans into the break with a
slight 1-0 advantage.
Despite only scoring once in the frame, the green and white
outshot their opponents by a significant 13-0 margin and held a 2-1
edge in corners.
The second stanza started off more as of the same, with the
Spartans continuing to dominate the action but simply unable to
score. Sophomore Erin Mummert (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring
Grove) looked to change the scoring woes in the 76th
minute when she hit a hard strike over Hood goalkeeper Rachelle
Buhrman. The ball looked destined for the back of the net, but
clanged off the crossbar, leaving the score line at 1-0.
Only six minutes later, the Spartans broke through for their
second tally of the match. Senior captain Caitlin Allen
(Langhorne, Pa./Council Rock South) struck a beautiful
corner kick from the left side of the field for an on-running
Jill Stanley (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale).
Stanley, an All-CAC forward, headed home the corner for the first
goal of her senior campaign.
Less than one minute later, Allen and Stanley combined once
again to give the Spartans a 3-0 advantage. Allen played a strong
service into Stanley who knocked home the far post score for her
second of the game.
In total, the Spartans recorded 27 shots, while York's
defense only allowed Hood two attempts. York also held a 7-1 bulge
in corner kicks.
Sophomore Desiree Halaka (Southampton,
N.Y./Southampton) picked up the win in the Spartan net as
she made one save. Freshman Sarah Spanarkel (Toms River,
N.J./Toms River North) finished off the clean sheet,
playing the game's final five minutes. Hood's Buhrman
played a great match making 13 saves and keeping her squad close
for much of the contest.
The Spartans hit the road for their next contest as they travel
to Rowan on Saturday, September 6, for a 7 pm contest.
