SALISBURY, MD-The York College field hockey suffered
their second straight Capital Athletic Conference loss as the
ninth ranked Salisbury University Sea Gulls downed the Spartans 3-0
on a dreary Saturday afternoon in Salisbury, MD. The Spartans fall
to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the CAC while the nationally ranked
Sea Gulls improve to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the CAC.
The game began well for the green and white as
Allison Roush (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim
Township) fired off the first shot of the
game for the Spartans a little over five minutes into the game.
Unfortunately for York, that would be their only offensive attempt
in the first half and their only shot attempt of the game.
The Sea Gulls got on the board just under 12
minutes into the game as Kandice Hancock scored on
Salisbury's first shot of the contest. The goal was
Hanock's sixth of the year as she now has 14 points for the
campaign. The Sea Gulls pushed the lead to 2-0 just over six
minutes later as Courtney Webster tallied an unassisted goal at the
17:04 mark. The goal was Webster's first of the season.
The Sea Gulls finished the first half with a
slight 3-1 edge in shots but two of their three attempts found the
back of the cage. Salisbury held a big 8-0 bulge in penalty corners
for the half.
The second half was much of the same for the
Spartans as Salisbury spent a majority of the half playing in
York's defensive half of the field. The Gulls pushed the lead
to 3-0 in the 16:42 into the second half as Tara McGovern fed
leading scorer Lauren Correll for her eighth goal of the year.
The Sea Gulls ended the game holding a
significant 16-1 edge in shots and a 18-3 bulge in penalty
corners.
Spartan netminder Claire Rekitzke
(Seaford, Del./Seaford Senior) kept the Spartans in the
game in the second half as she made 10 of her 11 saves in the
second 35 minutes of play. Anna Cooke went the distance in goal for
Salisbury as she was not forced to make a save in recording the
shutout.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday
afternoon as they host McDaniel in a non-conference contest. Game
time at Kinsley Field is set for 4:00 pm.
