SALISBURY, MD – The York College
men's soccer team took home a solid Capital Athletic
Conference victory with a 2-1 result over host Salisbury. The win
moves the #3 Spartans to a sparkling 9-0 for the season including
2-0 in CAC action, while Salisbury drops to 8-1-1 overall and 1-1
in league play.
After a 0-0 first half of play, junior Aaron Good
(Elizabethown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) put the Spartans on
the board first with 37:43 left in the second frame. Good made a
great individual effort on the right side of the Salisbury 18-yard
box. With Salisbury's goalkeeper Greg Wellinghoff bearing
down on him, Good struck a right-footed toe-poke, which he neatly
tucked just inside the far left post.
The Sea Gulls managed the equalizer ten minutes later on a Kyle
Sterling score. Romaine Bruney won an errant clearance near the top
of the Spartan box, which caromed off his face toward the Spartan
net. Bruney then beat Spartan goalkeeper Kyle Marks
(Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) to the free ball, and slipped a
great pass to the right foot of Sterling who promptly recorded his
fifth score of the year.
With only 6:16 remaining in the game, the Spartans tallied for a
second time to go up 2-1. Kemal Nuspahic (East Petersburg,
Pa./Warwick) played a beautiful across the middle of the
goal from the right side of the box. Junior Jon Ports
(Baltimore, Md./John Carroll) deftly struck the ball back
to the left foot of sophomore defender Trey Good (Narvon,
Pa./Pequea Valley) who had pushed forward on the play.
Good hit a solid bounding ball just to the right of Wellinghoff who
was unable to keep the attempt out of the goal due to the wet
conditions.
The Spartan side controlled much of the play throughout the
physical match, highlighted by a 20-7 bulge in shots. The green and
white also led 5-3 in corners.
Marks made a trio of saves in the Spartan net as he takes his
ninth win of the season. Wellinghoff takes the loss while also
recording three stops.
York returns to play on Tuesday, September 30, as they host CAC
foe Marymount. Action from Graham Field kicks-off at 4:00 pm.
