YORK, PA – The York College men's
soccer team opened their 2008 Capital Athletic Conference slate
with a 3-0 victory over visiting Stevenson University (3-6-1, 0-1
CAC). The win not only improves the #3 Spartans' record to
8-0 on the year, including 1-0 in the CAC, but also increases their
shutout streak to 561:22 consecutive minutes.
The green and white pushed the pace very early in the match,
amassing a corner kick and a pair of shots before a full 60 seconds
had elapsed. York constant pressure left Stevenson on their heels
and ball in the Spartans' offensive half for much of the
opening frame.
In the game's 34th-minute, the pressure paid off as York
capitalized on a set piece opportunity. After a Mustang foul in the
Spartans' offensive third, senior Chris Ports
(Baltimore, Md./John Carroll) struck a low curling free
kick to the near left post. An on-running Jon Ports
(Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) deflected the ball back toward
the middle of the goal where Kemal Nuspahic (East
Petersburg, Pa./Warwick) promptly tallied his team-leading
sixth goal of 2008.
York would take the 1-0 edge into the halftime break. After the
first 45 minutes, the Spartans led 12-2 in shots while holding an
8-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Just over ten minutes into the second stanza, sophomore
midfielder Lucas Emil (Parsippany, N.J./Morris
Catholic) put York's second notch on the scoreboard.
Emil, who had run onto a long pass from the Spartan midfield, fired
a ripper off the Mustang goalkeeper Adam Wiatrowski as he came off
his line to cut down Emil's angle. Emil then collected the
ensuing rebound, fought off a Mustang defender, and knocked home
his first tally of the season.
York would add a third score with just under five minutes
remaining in the match. Freshman Seth Hurley (Glenmoore,
Pa./Downingtown West) played a quality long ball to
Aaron Good (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area)
on the right side of the pitch. Good skillfully collected the pass
and, after a few touches, hit a solid strike that flew over an
oncoming Wiatrowski and dipped in for Good's first score as a
Spartan.
For the match, the Spartans held a 19-3 bulge in shots while
also owning an 8-1 margin in corners.
Goalkeeper Kyle Marks (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury)
picks up his eighth win in the Spartan net. Marks, who was only
forced to make a pair of saves, came up big for the Spartans in the
25th-minute shutting down a Tyler King breakaway opportunity with a
one-handed save to his left. Junior Ryan Hock (Brookeville,
Md./Sherwood) finished off the final 24:45 for the York
side, as he quelled several Mustang chances. Wiatrowski made a trio
of stops in his 86:04 of work before Ryan Flannelly came on for the
last 3:56 of the game.
York now returns to training with their sights focused on
Saturday's date with Salisbury. The clash of the CAC's
two previous champions commences at 2:30 pm in Salisbury, Md.
