YORK, PA-The York College
Spartan field hockey squad took on the Dickinson College Red Devils
on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon at Kinsley Field eager to keep
their winning streak alive. The Red Devils had different ideas on
how the day would pan out leaving the Spartans on the short end of
a 2-1 score. York is now 4-4 for the season and the Red
Devils' record improves to 4-3.
The afternoon contest got off to a slow start
with both sides equally controlling the field. Sophomore
Katie Dawkins (Easton, MD/Easton) played a strong
offense trying several times to cross the ball in front of the
cage. A strong defense was seen by both the Spartans and the Red
Devils keeping the level of play even.
Dickinson went on the offensive after their
sluggish start. That momentum was realized with a goal in the 11th
minute of play. Freshman Lizzie Boorse had an ample opportunity to
score within a scrum of players in front of the Spartan goal. It
was an unassisted shot and her second of the season. The remaining
time of the first half saw only a few shots on goal by both squads
as Dickinson took the 1-0 lead to the break.
As the Spartans return to the field for the
second half, their minds were in another place. They were anxious
and ready to tally a goal on the scoreboard. The Spartans made
several attempts but none proved to be fruitful. The Red Devils had
better luck, adding a second goal nearing the 56th minute of play.
Boorse delivered a beautiful cross to junior Katelynn Bias who was
able to take a strong stroke into the far left corner of the cage
for the goal.
The Spartans recorded their first tally in the
64th minute with sophomore Allison Roush (Lancaster, PA/
Manheim Township) assisting senior captain April
McFarland's (York, PA/ Eastern York) seventh goal of
the Spartan season. Roush had a breakaway shot down the field to an
open McFarland. McFarland was easily able to push the ball past the
Red Devil keeper for the score.
The Spartan offense saw another opportunity to
tie the contest, but time was not on their side. McFarland had the
ball in the left corner of the outside of the cage but time ran out
before she was able to deliver the tying goal.
Dickinson held a 7-3 edge in total shots while
the Red Devils had an 8-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Amanda West earned the win in goal for the Red
Devils as she recorded one save. Spartan junior Claire
Rekitzke (Seaford, Del./Seaford Senior) recorded two saves
for YCP.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday
September 23rd against the visiting Wesley Wolverines for their
second Capital Athletic Conference event of the season. Game time
at Kinsley Field is set for 4:30 pm.
