HUNTINGDON, PA-The York
College field hockey squad dropped their second straight contest as
the Juniata College Eagles snapped their six game losing skid with
a 3-2 victory over the Spartans on Tuesday afternoon in Huntingdon,
PA. The Spartans see their record level at 3-3 while the Eagles
improve to 2-6 overall.
In what has become a disturbing trend for the
Spartans, they surrendered an early goal as the Eagles got on the
board a mere 48 seconds into the game. Brittany Kauffman notched
the early unassisted goal to put the Spartans down very early.
York responded midway through the half as
senior April McFarland (York, Pa./Eastern York)
continued her torrid scoring streak with a goal from sophomore
Joan Shultis (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) with
16:15 left in the first.
The game went to the half tied but the Eagles
held a 6-1 edge in shots. Conversely, the Spartans had a 5-4 margin
in penalty corners.
The Eagles came out of the half much like they
did in the first half, striking for the tie-breaking goal just 2:45
into the stanza as Paula Price scored an unassisted tally.
Price struck again, notching the eventual
game-winner with 17:25 remaining in regulation. Price's
second goal was assisted by Kim Amrod.
The Spartans continued to battle to get back
into the game. McFarland then closed out the scoring with 10
seconds remaining in the game as she recorded an unassisted goal,
providing for the final margin. McFarland has scored the last four
Spartan goals as she now has six goals in five games this
season.
The Eagles finished the game holding a 14-8
edge in total shots and an 11-10 margin in penalty corners.
Abby Funk picked up the win in goal as she
registered three saves and one goal allowed in 66:55 of work.
Denalyn Spratt played the final 3:05 of the game and allowed
McFarland's second goal.
Spartan goalie Claire Rekitzke
(Seaford, Del./Seaford Senior) was tagged with the loss as
she allowed all three Eagle goals. Rekitzke notched six saves for
York.
The Spartans return to action Thursday when
they host Susquehanna in a non-conference contest. Game time is set
for 4:30 pm at Kinsley Field.
