ELIZABETHTOWN, PA – On a crisp, cool
evening in southern Pennsylvania, the York College women's
soccer team came out on the short end of a 2-0 score line against
host Elizabethtown. The loss drops the Spartans to 3-2-1 on the
season while the Blue Jays improve to 3-2-1.
Midway through the first frame, the green and white looked to
get on the board first as senior captain Kali Macgregor
(Rockville, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) snapped a
well-struck header off a Caitlin Allen (Langhorne,
Pa./Council Rock South) corner. The ball rifled toward the
low left corner of the Blue Jay net but was halted by goalkeeper
AngelaFreeland who made a brilliant diving save to her right,
preserving the 0-0 score.
In the 34th minute, Elizabethtown was able to strike first as a
Spartan foul gave the Blue Jays a free kick only 25 yards from
goal. Brooke Dotterer ripped a gorgeous right-footed shot that
pierced through the cool night air before finding its way to
left-side netting of the Spartan goal. Dotterer's third score
of the season gave the Blue Jays a 1-0 advantage.
After the halftime break, Elizabethtown stretched their lead to
two in the 57th minute of play. Dotterer slipped a through ball to
an on-running Jenna Russo giving her a 1v1 opportunity on Spartan
goalkeeper Desiree Halaka (Southampton,
N.Y./Southampton). Russo promptly capitalized on the
chance, scoring her attempt high to the near post.
With the lead at 2-0 the Spartans pressed for a score but were
simply unable to break the Blue Jay's back line. York settled
for several harmless long attempts that each went for naught.
For the contest, Elizabethtown led 11-9 in shots and held a 5-3
edge in corner kicks.
Freeland takes the win in the Blue Jay net as she made a trio of
saves. Halaka takes the loss despite making five saves and cutting
off numerous crosses.
The Spartans will look to right the ship on Saturday as they
host Mary Washington at Graham Field. The Capital Athletic
Conference showdown is slated for 1:00 pm.
