GETTYSBURG, PA - Junior All-American
Jon Ports (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) collected a
loose ball and converted the turnover into a goal with a
left-footed bomb from 30 yards out with a mere 27 seconds remaining
in the second overtime, lifting the #3 Spartans to a 1-0 win at
Gettysburg on Tuesday night. The victory moves the Spartans to 6-0
on the season while the Bullets drop to 2-2-2.
As time swiftly ticked away in the final overtime, the
Gettysburg defense attempted to clear the ball from their defensive
third of the field. An opportunistic Ports collected the misplayed
clearance, turned and fired a brilliant left-footed, 30-yard strike
that found the back of the Bullet net. The junior's third
goal of the season is his second game-winner of the 2008 campaign.
The sides played 109:33 minutes of scoreless action until Ports
was able to break through. The Spartans were not without their
chances however, collecting 25 shots before Ports' score,
including hitting the post five times.
York limited the Bullets' chances to a mere three shots,
only allowing one after the first 45 minutes. The Spartans also
kept Gettysburg from set piece opportunities as the Bullets only
drew two corner kicks, which both came in the first half.
Kyle Marks (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) picks up
the win in the Spartan net as he was only forced to make a pair of
saves. Adam Finkel started in goal for Gettysburg but was replaced
by Jeff Greenlaw in the 29th minute. Greenlaw made all six Bullet
saves in his 81:33 and kept the Spartans at bay for the majority of
the match.
The green and white returns to action on Saturday, as they face
Susquehanna in a non-conference tilt. Both squads will travel to
Millville, Pa. for a 7:00 pm match, with the game taking place at
Millard Ludwig Stadium on the campus of Millville High School.
