YORK, PA-The York College women's basketball
team rolled to their seventh win with a 81-45 victory over
Stevenson University in Capital Athletic Conference action on
Saturday in York. The Spartans improve to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in
the conference while the Mustangs fall to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in
the conference.
The Spartans sprinted out to a 10-0 lead to open
the game. The run was started with back-to-back triples from
Chanel Perez (Biglerville, Pa./Gettysburg) and
Amanda Andrews (Fallston, Md./Fallston). Stevenson
cut the lead to seven but York quickly pushed the lead to 16 at
21-5 with 13:09 remaining in the half. The Mustangs cut the Spartan
advantage to 13 at 27-14 but York closed out the remaining 7:29 of
the half outscoring the Mustangs 18-9 to take a 45-23 margin to the
half.
The second half saw the Green and White slowly
extend their lead. The advantage hung around the mid-20 point
margin until a 12-2 spurt allowed the Spartans to reach the 30
point plateau at 69-39. The Green and White finished the game with
a 36 point margin of victory, their fourth 30-plus point win of the
year.
The Spartans were paced by senior Keli
Ward (Nottingham, Pa./Oxford) as she notched 14 points,
eight assists, five rebounds, and five steals in 31 minutes of
action. Ward was 6-for-13 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the line
in the win. Sophomore April Sparkman (Walkersville,
Md./Walkersville) also had 14 points for the balanced
Spartan attack. Sparkman added four rebounds, three assists, and
three steals. Sparkman was 6-for-11 from the floor including 2-of-3
from distance. Andrews recorded 12 points three rebounds, three
assists, and a pair of steals while senior Amy Fry
(Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) was the fourth Spartan in
double figures with 10 points in addition to her five rebounds.
Sophomore Gayle Exley (Spring City, Pa./Owen J.
Roberts) came off the bench to tied her career-high with
nine points while she established a new career standard with six
rebounds.
The Mustangs were led by Denita Brown as she had
11 points and four rebounds in 19 minutes of action. Brown was
4-for-8 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the free throw line. Joy
Bettis added seven points and three rebounds while Kristen Steiner
had a team-high eight rebounds in the game.
The Spartans finished the game shooting
45.2% from the floor and a sharp 46.7% from beyond the arc.
York was 18-for-22 (81.8%) from the free throw line in the
win. Stevenson shot 29.3% for the game which is a trend for Spartan
opponents. York has limited their opponents to just
34.3% shooting from the field for the year, ranking them
third in the CAC in that category. The Spartans' +24.6
scoring margin ranks second, just behind the Marymount Saints.
York finished the game with a 24-7 edge in
points off of turnovers, and a 16-2 bulge in fast break points.
The Spartans conclude the fall semester portion
of their schedule on Tuesday evening as they travel to Salisbury to
face the Sea Gulls in a CAC contest. Tip time in Salisbury,
MD is set for 6:00 pm.
