FREDERICK, MD-The York College
women's basketball squad continued to roll as they opened
Capital Athletic Conference play on Wednesday with a 77-27
drubbing of Hood College in Frederick, MD. The win is the Spartans
sixth straight as they improve to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in league
play. The Blazers fall to 2-5 and 0-1 in the conference loop.
The Spartans started off a big slow as they led
just 8-5 with just over five minutes gone in the opening half. The
Green and White then took off as they hit the hosts with an 26-4
run that pushed the lead to 34-9 with 6:21 left in the half. The
Spartan bulge eventually reached 30 at 42-12 when senior
Keli Ward (Nottingham, Pa./Oxford) hit a lay up 10
seconds prior to the half.
York continued to apply the pressure in the
second half as Spartan head coach Betsy Witman got her reserves
some quality time and her starters got a short night of action. The
Green and White continued to build their lead as they reached the
40 point margin with just over 14 minutes left and to the 50 point
plateau with seven minutes remaining in the game. The Spartans
reached a high water mark of 54 points before the Blazers'
Brianna Raithel hit a trio of threes over the final five minutes of
the game to cut into the Spartan advantage.
The Spartans were led by sophomore April
Sparkman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) as she poured in
20 points in just 26 minutes of action. She was 7-for-12 from the
field including 3-for-5 from three. Sparkman also pulled in nine
rebounds and handed out three assists. Senior
Amanda Andrews (Fallston, Md./Fallston)
returned to her home state and tallied 12 points with five
rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Ward chipped in with eight
points, a game-high 10 rebounds, seven assists, and three steals in
just 24 minutes of play. Sophomore Jaimie Sapp (Bluemont,
Va./Loudon Valley) added eight points and six rebounds to
the Spartan cause.
The Blazers were paced by Raithel as her trio of
treys for nine points were a team-high. Blazer standout Jen
Willison was held in check as she had just six points in addition
to her eight rebounds. Willison was harassed into seven turnovers
in the game as the Blazers committed 24 miscues in the game.
Jessica Head added four points, nine rebounds, and two steals to
the Blazer cause.
York finished the game shooting 41% from the
floor and a chilly 15.8% from beyond the arc. The Spartans were a
steady 10-for-15 from the charity stripe. The Blazers converted
just 16.1% from the floor for the contest while they did make
3-of-10 from distance. Hood was 6-for-12 from the free throw
line.
York recorded a 62-35 margin on the glass. The
62 boards as the second highest single game total in Spartan
history.
The Green and White return to action on Saturday
evening as they host Stevenson University in a Capital
Athletic Conference contest. Tip time at
Charles Wolf Gymnasium is set for 5:00 pm.
