GETTYSBURG, PA-The York College men's basketball team dropped a
tough 60-51 loss to the undefeated Gettysburg College Bullets on
Tuesday night in Bream Gymnasium in Gettysburg. The Spartans fall
to 1-4 overall while the Bullets move to 3-0.
The game did not start well for the visitors as Gettysburg
jumped out to a six point lead including a four-point play from Dan
Capkin less than two minutes into the game. The Spartans rebounded
quickly from the rough start to outscore Gettysburg 19-5 over the
next five minutes to take a 19-11 lead with 12:07 left in the half.
The Bullets battled back to tie the game at 25 on a Paul Crone
three with 4:10 remaining in the half. After Corey Dorsey gave the
hosts a three point lead, the Spartans took the halftime advantage
courtesy of a Nick Brady (Hanover, Pa./Delone
Catholic) jumper and an Andrew Pawlyk (Bernville,
Pa./Tulpehocken) basket 45 seconds prior to the break.
York led 29-28 at the half as it would be the first time this year
that the Spartans have led at the intermission.
After the half, York came out and pushed their lead to five just
over two minutes into the stanza. The Bullets responded with a
Capkin three point play followed by a Dorsey triple to take a 34-33
lead. York recaptured the lead and held a 39-38 advantage after a
Brady lay up at the 10:40 mark. Dorsey then hit a lay up and a dunk
in a 30 second span to give the Bullets a 42-39 lead. It would be a
lead the hosts would not relinquish the rest of the way. York cut
the lead to two at 47-45 before Gettysburg stretched it back to six
with 2:25 left. A pair of Brady free throws cut the Gettysburg
advantage to three at 54-51 with 55 seconds remaining but the
Bullets went 6-for-6 from the free throw line over the final 46
seconds to salt away the victory.
Dorsey powered the Bullets to victory as he poured in 22 points.
Dorsey was 8-for-16 from the floor including 2-for-8 from three. He
was 4-for-7 from the free throw line for the game. Capkin was the
other Bullet in double figures with 16 points as he went 5-for-14
from the floor including 3-for-6 from three and 3-for-4 from the
free throw line. Andrew Powers chipped in with seven points, a
team-high 10 rebounds, and four assists. Joe Spierenburg
contributed six points, five rebounds, four assists, and five
blocked shots.
Gettysburg shot 41.7% from the floor in the contest including
33.3% (6-for-18) from three. The Bullets were a cool 14-for-22
(63.6%) from the charity stripe but the hosts did convert 10-for-14
in the second half.
The Spartans were led by freshman Julian Watson
(Odenton, Md./Arunel) as the point guard tied his
career-high with 13 points while he also had three rebounds and
three assists. Watson was 5-for-11 from the floor and 3-for-4 from
the free throw line. Brady recorded a double-double with 12 points
and a career-high 12 rebounds. Brady was 5-for-10 from the floor
and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Junior Jeremy Keefer
(Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) was the third Spartan in double
figures as he had 10 points, three rebounds, and three steals.
Keefer was an uncharacteristic 4-for-14 from the floor in the game.
York struggled from distance as they were 0-for-8 from beyond
the arc while they shot 40% from the field for the game. York was
7-for-10 from the free throw line. York committed 22 fouls to just
15 for the hosts.
York returns to action on Saturday evening as they host Messiah
College in a non-conference contest. Game time at
Wolf Gymnasium is set for 7:00 pm.
