WASHINGTON, DC – For the second time in
two games the York College women's soccer team captured a 2-1
overtime victory, this time against Catholic University in
Washington, DC Wednesday evening. The Spartans improve to 6-4-1
while the Cardinals fall to 4-5-1 on the season.
Merely 4:11 into overtime, sophomore forward Ali Jones
(Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding) tallied her third goal of
the season to give her squad the 2-1 victory. Junior midfielder
Kaitlyn Harney (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic)
struck a shot from the right flank that seemed destined for pay
dirt. As it flew over the head of Catholic's goalkeeper, the
ball clanged off the crossbar and ricocheted to just off the left
corner of the goal. An alert Jones quickly corralled the loose ball
and chipped her shot back across the face of goal with just enough
to dip it into the far right netting.
During regulation, the green and white struck first with a goal
from senior forward Jill Stanley (Stewartstown,
Pa./Kennard-Dale) in the game's 55th minute. Junior
Lauren Stewart (West River, Md./Southern), who
played an excellent match in the Spartans' defensive
midfield, found Stephanie Rice (Glen Rock,
Pa./Susquehannock) on the left flank. Rice touched the
ball around a Cardinal defender before slotting a pass to an
on-running Stanley. The senior All-CAC performer cranked a ripper
that bored into the back of Catholic's net.
The Cardinals' would answer just over four minutes later
on a penalty kick from Diana Spadaro. The penalty occurred after
Catholic lofted a cross from their right side into the Spartan box.
As players jockeyed for position, one Cardinal took a spill
resulting in the referee awarding the penalty kick. Spadaro would
convert the attempt to tie the game at one.
Despite the Spartans owning the better of the play for most of
the second frame, regulation would end with both sides tied at one,
before Jones' game-winner in overtime.
For the match, York took a commanding 16-6 lead in shots while
they also grabbed a 6-4margin in corners. Junior Katherine
Torode (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) played a spectacular
match for the Spartans, controlling the offensive central midfield.
The defensive unit of Caitlin Allen (Langhorne, Pa./Council
Rock South), Kali Macgregor (Rockville,
Md./Academy of the Holy Cross), Ally Wivell
(Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin), and Jackie Moser
(Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) thwarted numerous Cardinal
attacks and squelched several opportunities before they became
dangerous.
Sophomore goalkeeper Desiree Halaka (Southampton,
N.Y./Southampton) takes the win in the Spartan net,
collecting four saves. Halaka played a superb match cutting off
through-ball after through-ball, as the Cardinals attempted to go
over the top of the Spartan defense. Tere Rossi put on a solid
performance for Catholic making several athletic saves as she
recorded six stops.
York returns home on Friday, October 10, for a Capital Athletic
Conference match against Marymount. The CAC tilt is slated for 4:00
pm.
